Jones Makes His Decision

It was a close recruiting race for the services of wide receiver Marvin Jones, Etiwanda (Calif.) Etiwanda HS, but in the end of a long, grueling process it was a matter of environment that made the difference. The 4-star wide receiver made his decision on Sunday where he would spend the next four or five years of his life.

"It has the same kind of environment as my home," said Jones of Berkeley, California. "The kind of environment that I want to be in."

With that in mind Jones accepted the scholarship offer from the University of California on Sunday and made a verbal commitment to be part of the 2008 Bear recruiting class.

Jones had narrowed his choice down between Cal and Oregon. Both treated Jones well and he was particularly impressed with Oregon's spread offense -- the same offense his high school runs. Jones visited Oregon the weekend of the Cal game and took his only other official visit this last weekend to Cal.

While the Jones enjoyed the "glitz and glamour of the Oregon facilities" his decision came down to the football environment at Cal and the close relationship he has developed with California's receiver coach Dan Ferrigno and the prospects of rainy weather in Oregon.

"It was the coaching relationship, how they showed me love," Jones said of the Cal coaching staff. "Especially Coach Ferrigno."

Early on in the recruiting process Jones was interested in California, as the Bears were the first to offer him, but when he made his trip to Eugene two weeks ago the Ducks pulled even. It was not until he visited Berkeley this weekend that things seemed to fall in place for him. One of the things that he likes about Berkeley is that the weather is the same as his home and the thought of spending a raining winter in Oregon was not too appealing to him.

"The weather was a big difference," Jones admitted. "The rain would be a big adjustment for me."

Jones is finished with the recruiting of which he described as "a long process."

Besides California and Oregon, Arizona, Arizona State, Fresno State, Nebraska and Oregon State offered Jones a scholarship.
