Men and Women Harriers Sweep Beaver Classic

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The University of Oregon cross country programs cruised to team and individual titles Saturday in the Beaver Classic at Bush Park, their final appearance of the regular season.

The Men of Oregon tallied 16 points to win the Division 1-scored team competition, as teams from Portland and Portland State finished second and third with 48 and 74 points, respectively. The UO women posted a perfect score of 15 points and beat Oregon State (second, 50) and Portland State (third, 115).

In the men's 8,000m race, a pair of unattached Duck runners – Isaac Stoutenburgh and Patrick Werhane - crossed the line together in first place in the same time of 24:10.

Six current UO-affiliated or unattached men's runners immediately followed to complete a sweep of the top eight positions overall and included senior James Withers (third, 24:12), sophomore Kevin McNally (fourth, 24:12), unattached runners Chris Winter (fifth, 24:21) and Chad Hall (sixth, 24:26), senior Esteban Trujillo (seventh, 24:38) and redshirt freshman Mathew Cravens (eighth, 24:46).

Other finishers wearing Duck singlets included redshirt freshmen Matthew Dettman (12th, 25:14), Eric Dettman (14th, 25:22) and Ken Scoggin (17th, 25:34) and redshirt junior Vincent D'Onofrio (21st, 225:46).

Other unattached entries from the UO program included Ian Terpin (13th, 25:17) and David Bondi (15th, 25:23).

Sophomore Brooke Giuffre won the women's 6,000m race (21:18) and led a 1-7 sweep of the top places Saturday. Other scorers included freshmen Claire Michel (second, 21:30), Hayley Belli (third, 21:41) and Erin Lewis (fourth, 22:16) and sophomore Lauren Zaludek (fifth, 22:28).

Other UO entries included sophomore Berkeley Aldinger-Gibson (sixth, 23:15) and junior Tamara Starodubtseva (seventh, 23:17).

Looking ahead to next weekend, the Ducks make the same hour trip north to the Pacific-10 Conference Championships, hosted by Oregon State University at Trysting Tree Golf Course, Sat., Oct. 27. The men's 8,000m race begins at 9:30 a.m., and the women's 6,000m race follows at 10:30 a.m. More meet information is located at the and websites.

The Duck men won their 14th Pac-10 team title last year, while the UO women took fourth in the league meet for the second straight season – its first pair of top-four finishes since 1997 and '98. Junior and individual champion Galen Rupp was one of four All-Pac-10 honorees for the UO men with fellow first-team recipient and redshirt junior Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott (sixth overall), and sophomore Diego Mercado and Patrick Werhane were tabbed to the second team (ninth / 12th overall), as was junior Zoe Nelson in the women's race (14th overall).
