Halftime- Oregon 21, Arizona State 13

Eugene, OR —Arizona State rolled into Autzen Stadium today boasting a #4 BCS ranking—its highest in school history. The Sun Devils also entered the game with the second highest offensive output in the Pac-10. Unfortunately for ASU, Oregon scored early and often in the first half on their way to an early lead.

1st Quarter

The Ducks sprinted out of the gates early with a huge pass from Dennis Dixon to Jaison Williams on the first play of the game. Two plays later Dixon and Williams connected again on a screen pass for a touchdown that went 18 yards uncontested to cap the brief 1 minute 13 second drive. Oregon 7, Arizona State 0

Arizona State QB Rudy Carpenter connected with WR Rudy Burgess for a big gain on their first play of the game, and again on another long pass a few plays later to reach the Oregon 20 yard line. RB Dimitri Nance shed a couple Oregon tackles on a long run to set the Sun Devils up with four fresh downs at the Duck 3 yard line. The big uglies in green held the Devils out of the end zone on three straight rushing attempts and forced an ASU field goal. Oregon 7, Arizona State 3

Dennis Dixon picked up 15 yards on a fake screen pass that saw him scramble up the middle past a befuddled Sun Devil linebacker. Jonathan Stewart juked his way past a few Devils two plays later and lowered his shoulder against an unfortunate ASU safety to pick up 15 yards of his own. Dixon faked a statue of liberty play at the 18 yard line that looked promising initially before the speedy Sun Devil line held him for a minimal gain. Jaison Williams dropped a sure touchdown across the middle before Jonathan Stewart bailed him out with a 16 yard TD reception. Oregon 14, Arizona State 3

On the next Sun Devil series, ASU reached the 34 yard line before a fumbled snap on third down forced the punt. Oregon avoided a costly roughing the kicker penalty that would have cost the Ducks possession when the Sun Devils were flagged on the same play for an illegal formation. The Ducks reached their own 43 yard line on third down before time ran out in the first quarter.

2nd Quarter

Dixon ran for 14 yards to pick up an Oregon first down to start the second quarter. Garren Strong got in on the action two plays later to pick up another first down before Dixon and Williams connected again across the middle—this time for a 27 yard touchdown reception that was nearly uncontested. Oregon 21, Arizona State 3

Rudy Carpenter continued to shine on the ensuing drive while picking up big yardage through the air, and a big third down conversion with his legs. Rudy Carpenter threw a perfect corner route to his receiver in the end zone for another Sun Devil touchdown. Rudy Carpenter has not had an incompletion in the game to this point. Oregon 21, Arizona State 10

The Ducks were ineffective on their next series and punted after picking up only two yards. Arizona State recovered the Josh Syria punt and returned it for big yardage to their own 47 yard line.

RB Keegan Herring picked up 15 yards and Rudy Carpenter scrambled for another first down to reach the Oregon 29 yard line in only two plays. Carpenter threw his first incompletion on 2nd and 8 from the Oregon 17 to bring up a crucial third down. Carpenter's 2nd incompletion of the day came on the next play when Walter Thurmond III broke up a pass at the goal line to force an ASU field goal. Oregon 21, Arizona State 13

Dixon and the Ducks came out firing on the next drive but the Sun Devil defense made a couple great plays while the Ducks went backwards on a false start penalty and were forced into their second straight 3 and out.

Nick Reed sacked Carpenter for a huge loss on the Devil's next possession to force an obvious passing down on 3rd and 16. Quick pressure in the backfield had Carpenter scrambling for a short gain and subsequent punt.

Aaron Pflugrad returned the ASU punt to the opposing 38 yard line and the Ducks picked up some nice yardage before Dixon and Stewart bobbled a hand off on third and short. ASU pounced on the ball at the Oregon 49 yard line to start their next drive.

Oregon's defense made a couple plays to keep the Devils away from the end zone, but a personal foul by Jerome Boyd on 2nd and VERY long gave ASU an automatic first down at the Oregon 30 yard line. Arizona State made it all the way to the Oregon 13 yard line before they were forced to attempt a field goal with time running out. The kick sailed wide right to keep the Sun Devils from adding to their score. Oregon 21, Arizona State 13

Standout first-half Ducks

T.J. Ward continued to show his special teams prowess in the first half as he picked off the Sun Devil kick returner in the open field once again. John Bacon racked up 6 big tackles by the end of the first quarter. Dennis Dixon went 10/16 in the first quarter for 160 yards and 3 touchdowns. Josh Syria has punted twice for 93 yards. 46.5 avg!!!
