Ducks Starters Control Tigers

Eugene, OR - The 12th ranked Oregon Ducks (2-0, 0-0) defeated the Pacific Tigers (1-1) of the Big West Conference Sunday night in in McArthur Court by the score of 80-64 to remain unbeaten. Tajuan Porter led the Ducks with 28 points on 10-15 from the field including five three-pointers. Malik Hairston contributed 20 points while Maarty Leunen added 17 points and a game-high ten rebounds.

After scoring 100 points against Pepperdine last night, Oregon relied a lot more on it's starters in tonight's game against Pacific. The starters accounted for all but 31 minutes played on the night.

"I thought this game required us to stay with a shorter bench" commented Oregon coach Ernie Kent, "they are a tough basketball team."

Kamyron Brown, whom Kent calls a "very, very good basketball" player was first off the bench and led all reserves with 22 minutes. Brown is a very quick and unselfish point guard who is happy to set up his teammates and finished with three assists, two steals, and two rebounds.

Oregon got off to a slow start, unable to shake the Tigers during a competitive first-half. Oregon took a 34-27 lead into halftime on only 39.3% shooting from the field (11-28) and in spite of an 21-16 rebounding deficit.

Joevan Catron started to control the glass in the 2nd half as Oregon overcame the halftime rebounding deficit and ended up with a 34-31 advantage on the boards. Catron finished the night with four points and eight rebounds.

Franz Dorsainvil played three minutes in the first half and despite his imposing frame ended up with one turnover and a foul. LaKendric Longmire was the only other non-starter to see action, playing a total of eight minutes with one rebound.

Coach Kent hopes to utilize the fresh legs on the bench in tomorrow's finale of the World Vision Invitational against Western Michigan University (1-1) of the MAC conference at Mac Court starting at 7:30 PM.

Pacific was led by impressive junior guard Steffan Johnson who had 22 points and five assists in thirty minutes, including three three-pointers.
