Rice Takes Aim at Team USA

SPOKANE, Wash. - University of Oregon junior pitcher Melissa Rice will start Thursday night against the world's top softball team when her regional all-star squad takes on Team USA in its KFC Bound 4 Beijing appearance.

Part of the U.S. National Team's 40-city, pre-Olympic tour, the 7:30 p.m. game is one of seven remaining before the three-time defending Olympic champions compete in Beijing, China, August 12-21.

Fans can get autographs after the nine-inning event event at Franklin Park Softball Complex, and more ticket information for the event is available via the http://www.spokanesportsevents.com/spokanesportsevents website.

The U.S. National Team squad is 52-1 on its tour that started in mid-February with its only blemish a 1-0 no-hit loss to Virginia Tech's Angela Tincher.

Rice ended the '08 campaign with a 12-11 record, led the squad in ERA (2.31), and her other season stats follow: 34 appearances, 22 starts, 10 complete games, 3 shutouts, 4 combined shutouts, 139.1 innings, 41 walks, 87 strikeouts.

The Colville, Wash., native Rice was the Ducks' Pitching MVP her freshman and sophomore seasons in 2006 and '07, and will again be one of the team's top returnees in 2009. On the all-time UO pitching charts, she ranks top-10 all-time for UO in shutouts (sixth, 16), wins (seventh, 40), innings (eighth, 445.1), strikeouts (eighth, 280) and complete games (ninth, 37)
