Last week he played on defense and yesterday was switched back to the offense in what Head Coach Mike Bellotti characterizes as a "temporary permanent" move, meaning the coaching staff is still deciding where Stevens fits in best.
For Hamani Stevens, moving from defense to offense takes a little used to, still though he is enjoying it all.
"Going to defense from offense is like playing two different games," said Stevens. "Defense was fun but I guess the need for me on offense was more."
It isn't that Stevens lacks talent at either spot, in fact it is just the opposite. He is one of the few freshmen that is likely to see playing time this season. It is just of question of where. He showed signs at defensive tackle that he could become a force. Last Saturday though there were a number of bad snaps by back up centers, causing questions to be asked if that was the reason for the move. Stevens doesn't think so.
"It was mostly that next year there are a lot of seniors graduating so they wanted me to step in and get me started on that offense," explained Stevens for the reason of the move.
He went on to say that the defensive line was pretty stacked with guys like Sonny Harris, Cole Linehan and playing on that side would be tougher to see the field than going on offense.
No matter what, Steven is willing play anywhere the coaches ask and right now is anxious to start preparing for the opening game against the Washington Huskies.
Back to Offense No Problem for Stevens
