Quarterback Justin Roper was 3-for-4 for 51 yards, including a long of 26. He also rushed for once for a 25-yard touchdown run. All this with a limited number of snaps.
Last season, Roper was stuck at the end of the bench but when Dennis Dixon, Brady Leaf and Nathan Costa all went down with injuries, it was Roper in the Sun Bowl. The rest as they say, is history.
"Last year was such a roller-coaster I didn't know what to think, I was sort of the last option so it was like here it goes," said Roper. "Now I'm another year into the system and I can take more responsibility in leading the team."
Mike Bellotti was pleased with Roper even in a limited role in today's scrimmage.
"Justin Roper did a nice job," said Bellotti. "He was 3-of-4 and one was just tipped away."
With Nate Costa's status currently unknown due to a knee injury, it is likely that Roper will be the starter next week in the season opener and beyond.
Roper at least for now #1
