Lewis Likely to See More PT

Malachi Lewis came so close to having a touchdown reception last week against Arizona State but the ball was just a little bit beyond his reach. This week when the Oregon Ducks take on the California Bears at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley, Lewis may get another chance to score.

I'm hoping to play, as I've been playing get in there much more," said the soft spoken Lewis. "Help the team out."

Lewis indicated the amount of time he plays will depend on what the game plan is, but earlier this week Head Coach Mike Bellotti mentioned that Lewis could see more time in relief of a dinged up Ed Dickson. For Lewis' part, it is about being ready. When Lewis came to Oregon he was going to be a running back, but the needs of the team changed and Lewis moved to tight end. It has been a learning experience for him but anyone who has seem him stride down the field knows it is a matter of time before he makes his presence felt. He's been working with quarterback Jeremiah Masoli so the two are familiar with each other.

"It always helps to get in there and get some chemistry with the quarterbacks (and) get a couple catches," admitted Lewis. "So when it's game time, they look your way."

A win over Cal could pave the way for the Oregon Ducks to have one its most successful seasons ever. That comes at a price though. After the big win last week over ASU, Monday saw a big turnout for practice, with even the battered ready to go. The enthusiasm was very high according to some sideline observers.

"There's a lot riding on this game this week," said Lewis of the Cal game. "So we know we've got to come to practice everybody is bringing their hard hat ready to go to work.

So far this season Lewis has appeared in all eight games and has two catches for 11 yards. If Dickson is not totally at full speed Lewis will be ready and he as well as Duck fans would love to see the next chance at a touchdown be successful.
