DL commits to Ducks

Victor Filipe, a 6-4, 290 pound defensive lineman played high school ball at Salt Lake City (Utah) Highland and signed with BYU over UCLA two years ago. Filipe returned from a Mormon mission four months ago and after taking a couple of visits, has committed to Oregon.

"I'm very excited about going to Oregon," Filipe said. "The whole time I was gone, I had intended to come back home and play at BYU. When I got home though, I decided to check out my options and visited Nebraska and then Oregon this past weekend.

"I also had visits set with Notre Dame and Washington State but I already canceled both of them, I'm a solid commit to Oregon. There was a lot of things I liked about Oregon but the main reason I'm going there is to play with my cousin Haloti Ngata. He loves it there and it will be great to line up along side him and cause some serious havoc, just like we did back in high school. A couple of Salt Lake City kids representing, that's how I see it.

"I got along well with all the players there, it's such a family. The coaches are great too and the facilities are very nice. I have to give Nebraska a slight edge in their weight room, but overall, I just felt like Oregon was the best fit for me."

Filipe weighed around 275 pounds out of high school but said he has been working out like crazy since he has returned and put on a solid 15 pounds of muscle.

"I'm in the best shape of my life right now," Filipe said. "I'm going to be enrolling for the Winter quarter so I'll be able to participate in spring ball. That will give me a chance to get acclimated to college ball so when fall camps rolls around, I'll be ready to go."
