Named in honor of former University of Miami All-American and 15-year NFL veteran Ted Hendricks, criteria for the award includes on-field performance, leadership abilities and contributions to recipient's school and community.
The Ducks' 6-2, 250-pound Trabuco Canyon, Calif., standout became only the school's second defensive lineman in 21 years to be voted Oregon's Most Outstanding Player following the regular season, finishing with 50 tackles. The big-play artist leads the nation in fumble recoveries (5), ranks second in the country in quarterback sacks (13) and is tied for fifth nationally in tackles for loss (19.5).
The two-time first-team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American owns the school record for most career quarterback sacks (29.5) and shares the Ducks' single-season record for most QB sacks (13) with Ernest Jones (1993).
Joining Reed as a finalist are Florida State's Everette Brown, TCU's Jerry Hughes, Indiana's Jammie Kirlew, Penn State's Aaron Maybin and Texas' Brian Orakpo.
Twenty-five players received votes in the opening round of balloting this season that determined the six finalists. Final voting will be concluded by Dec. 8, with the winner of the award expected to be announced Dec. 10.
