Hangin' With Mr. Cooper

Despite being the leading rusher in the state of California in 2008, Citrus Hill High School's Deontae Cooper hasn't had the kind of pomp and circumstance going in to 2010 like some of California's other top running backs. Yet, the Perris native takes it all in stride and he sat down with eDuck Sports recently to discuss recruiting and his interest in Oregon.

Have you had any contact with Oregon?

"I get letters in the mail...statistics and stuff like that."

How often do you receive mail from Oregon?

"I'd say every two to three weeks."

Have you had any verbal contact with the coaches from Oregon?

"Not really. I see them, they come to my school, but I'm not really allowed to talk to them so I just wave."

What would you say your overall interest in Oregon is?

"I like the uniforms, I like the colors."

(Laughter) Outside of the uniforms, would you say there is something that stands out to you about the program?

"The offense. They run a spread. I like the I-formation too, but I like the offense they run there."

How would you describe yourself as a running back?

"I'm a running back who gets his yards, I like to get my yards. I'm a north and south back."

Would you compare yourself to anyone at the collegiate or professional level?

"No, no, no...I'm not there yet. I'm not at that level yet, but hopefully one day I will."

What are you looking for in a program?

"A program that runs the ball and that's about the team...I want to go to a school where I know the coaches are going to be there for four years."

Have you received any offers from other schools?

"I got an offer from Stanford, Arizona, Colorado...I got an official one from Colorado in the mail and then I talked to Jim Harbaugh (Stanford head coach) that was a verbal one and Arizona was a verbal too." Note: Deontae received an offer from Arizona State since the last time we spoke.

Is anyone leading at this point?

"No, I really don't. I'm open...open-minded."

If Oregon were to offer, where would they stand amongst that group?

"Everybody would [still] be even. I'm taking it slow."

Are you planning on going to any camps later this spring or in the summer?

"It depends. I ask my coach for a lot of advice. I go to him when I have questions, so it just depends."

Are you planning on attending any Junior Days?

"Yeah, Stanford told me about one [on April 4]. I might [go], but I'm not sure yet. That's the only one I know about so far."
