Gottschalk Shopping For Pac-10 Offers

Despite being a bit undersized, Ben Gottschalk maintains that he's one of the premier offensive line prospects on the West Coast. There's no question the three-star tackle from Sherman Oaks (CA) Notre Dame High School has the frame and the skill to develop in to a top flight player, Gottschalk's just waiting for more people to notice.

Do you currently hold an offer from Oregon?

"No I do not."

Have you had any contact with Oregon?

"Yeah. I e-mail Coach [Steve] Greatwood every now and then, we talk. Coach [Scott] Frost was down at my school not too long ago visiting. I went up to Oregon for Junior Day, that was awesome, but other than that, no too much."

What have your conversations with Coach Greatwood been like?

"Normal, light stuff. Just getting to know each other, building comfort between position coach and player."

Has he mentioned anything about a potential offer maybe coming through for you?

What is your overall interest in Oregon at this point?

"I'd say it's really high, actually. I visited the school for Junior Day and I just loved it over there. The way the coaches talk, the way they treat their players, the way they teach their players not to become just better athletes, but better people overall, that's something that really appealed to me."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"I'd say I'm really aggressive. I'm also really, really competitive. I don't like to lose...ever. I'm quick, that's the element I have that most offensive linemen don't have. I'm about 6'4'' 255 lbs. and there's a bunch of offensive tackles out there getting recruited around here that are 6'5'' 300 lbs. and I'm just able to move a lot better than them. I'm just as strong, if not stronger."

Are most schools recruiting you at offensive tackle?

"I think most schools are looking to play me inside, maybe guard or center, or possibly even right tackle, but that'll all get sorted out when I [commit]."

Would you compare yourself to anyone at the collegiate or professional level?

"Not really. I'm not really too familiar with offensive linemen other than like, Jonathan Ogden. Not really, but probably mindset I'd have to compare it to like Deacon Jones. The was he just takes that aggressive, I'm going to kick your a*s kind of mentality."

What are you looking for in a program?

"Mostly, I think it's going to be the school I fit in the best [with]. I don't want to have to spend four, maybe five years at a school where I'm going to be completely miserable. I want to spend the next five years having fun and enjoying myself, while also getting a great education. I guess just the relationship between the coaches and the players."

What offers do you currently hold from other schools?

"Right now I have New Mexico State, San Diego State, UNLV, and Nevada offered me [last] Thursday."

Do you have any favorites at this point?

"Not really. The schools that have offered me, definitely have priority. So like, right now I'd have to say New Mexico State has more priority over Oregon, USC, UCLA, etc. Until these other schools offer me, they're kind of going to be secondary to the schools that have."

Have you been to any camps this spring, or are you planning on attending any camps this summer?

"Yeah, I will be at USC's offensive linemen camp and Washington's Rising Stars camp...I wanted to go to Oregon's but my coaches kind of frown upon the whole contact part of the camp."

Have you been on any unofficial visits aside from your trip to Oregon?

"I have been to San Diego State and USC. I haven't been to too many other schools yet."

NOTE: Gottschalk is also a three-year letterman in the Sherman Oaks (CA) Notre Dame HS Irish Knight band where he plays flugelhorn and trumpet.
