Whitaker Has An Explorer's Mentality

Make no bones about it, Oregon is hitting the South and hitting it hard and it has been established that there is no distance the Oregon coaching staff isn't willing to travel in order to land the best talent in the nation. Warner Robins (GA) defensive tackle, Jeffrey Whitaker, has taken a similar approach to his openness to the process, dubbing himself the soon to be "Marco Polo of recruiting."

Do you currently have an offer from Oregon?

"Yes. I do."

What kind of contact have you had with Oregon since the recruiting process began?

"I talked to the d-line coach [Jerry Azzinaro]."

How often have you been in contact with Coach Azzinaro?

"Well it was one time when he came on down here and I said I [was] going to end up catching a game at Oregon."

Has he been the only coach you've been in contact with from Oregon?

"Yes, because I was supposed to talk to the head coach one time, but I didn't get a chance to get in touch with him."

What would you say your overall interest in Oregon is?

"It's just like everybody else because I don't have any tops or nothing like that, so I'm just going to go and explore and see what everybody's got. Especially states like [Oregon] that I can't just get up and go to. So I'm really going to be examining."

Is there anything in particular about the school that interested you at all?

"Like I said, I'm just trying to learn more about it."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"I'm just trying to get better...just trying to get better. I think I'm pretty good (laughs), but just trying to get better."

Is there a particular aspect of your game that you think you excel at?

"I'm not, I guess, a bragging type or whatever, but I just try to be an overall d-lineman. I try to be the best Jeffrey Whitaker I can and whatever that is on the field, hey, I just try to be overall, everywhere, where the ball is at and be a playmaker, because I put the time and effort in it. I think I'm pretty good. If I put the time and effort in, I think I'm the best."

What are you looking for in a program?

"First, I'm going to want a fair chance and opportunity. And second, I want a communication level with the coach, because I think that's a big, A BIG, big thing you know to be able to communicate to the coach. A fair chance and an opportunity...and just the personalities and all that. I'm normal, not going to run up against any personalities [type of person]."

What offers do you currently hold from other schools?

"Georgia, Clemson, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Miami, California, Oregon, Alabama, so yeah it's a pretty good little bit."

Do you hold any favorites at this point?

"No, like I said before there's no tops. There's not too much favorites, I'm just analyzing, and then I'm going to go be the Marco Polo of recruiting...exploring everything (laughter)."

Have you been to any camps, or are you planning on attending any camps this summer?

"Alabama did a camp thing this year, so I'm just going to be working hard and training these next three weeks of June and in July, that's when I'm going to hit the road and start seeing the schools. I don't know about the camp thing. It's not that I'm scared of working out and all that stuff, I just feel like I need to spend more time and work on the little things and I need to get better myself."

As far as those schools in July that you plan on visiting, do you have any in particular that you will definitely be visiting?

"I should know in about a week and a half. Right now, I'm just analyzing, I should know in a week and a half what I'm really going to do."
