Heimuli Has Oregon Connection

Ricky Heimuli is a name to familiarize yourself with if you're in the market for a defensive tackle in 2010. The Salt Lake City (UT) Brighton star possess the entire package and is one of the best overall players on the West coast. eDuck Sports caught up Heimulu to get the latest.

Do you currently hold an offer from Oregon?

"Yes, I do."

How long ago did you receive that offer?

"I think I received it about 2 to 3 weeks ago."

What kind of contact have you had with Oregon since the recruiting process began?

I've been in touch with them pretty good. The d-line coach, Coach [Jerry] Azzinaro called me a few times and I've got to know him. He came down to my school during spring recruiting and we talked a little bit, so I say we keep in touch every other two weeks."

What would you say your overall interest in Oregon is?

"I feel like my interest in Oregon is really high. I'm mean, I've read everything about their program, everything they have to offer there. I know they're really in need of d-linemen after this season and I have an older brother who's really good friend with the starting d-end up there at Oregon, Will Tukuafu and he tells my brother a lot of good things about it. So, I like everything that they have to offer, so my interest in Oregon is really high. I them a lot."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"I have really good get-off. For my size -- I'm almost 6'5'', weighing in around 293 lbs -- I really move. I can move for my size. I don't stop running until the whistle is blown and I just attack the ball. I have a nose for the ball and love to get to it. I have great motor skills, so those are good things that I have that attracts a lot of attention."

How do you feel your skills stack up to players at the next level?

"I'd say it's getting close. I know that once I get to the college level, I know they will prepare me to be even better and so I'm just really excited to see where I end up because I know they'll prepare me for the college level and I know I'll be way better than I am now."

What are you looking for in a program?

"First of the education. The education program, what they have to offer. I'd like to see how well the coaches and players, how close they are with each other. I want to play where everyone plays as a team, where there's not just one person out there trying to win the game by themselves. I'm just looking for a very family oriented team, the education program, the way the coaches are, and the interest they show in me, I'll definitely show that back in return and just go from there."

Have you given any thought as to what you might want to major in once you get to school?

"Not yet really. I was leaning towards business, but I have older brothers and sisters who go to college and they've changed their major like, 13 times already. So I guess I'll see once I start college and get a little more in to what I want to do."

What offers do you you currently hold?

"Right now I currently hold 21 offers. I have offers from every Pac-10 school, every in-state school here in Utah -- Utah, Utah State, and BYU -- and I have stuff from the Big 12 which is Oklahoma, Nebraska, Colorado. I have some Michigan and Michigan State, Tennessee and LSU."

Do you have any favorites at this point?

"As of right now, I don't. I'm using this summer to get to know every program, coaches, trying to sit down with my parents to see if there is anytime to go out and visit some schools, but I definitely want to narrow down my list to a top ten maybe towards the end of the summer so I can get a good idea when it comes to my senior year. Me and my parents are trying to find the time to go see Oregon and Oregon State maybe in the next couple weeks, so that's something exciting I'm going to be looking forward to."

Do you have a timetable for making a decision?

"Right now I'm looking to do it maybe Signing Day. I could see myself even doing it maybe before [Signing Day]. I'm probably going to take my trips maybe after the season...maybe take one during the season, during a bye week or something and then take the rest after the season. Probably a month or two before Signing Day."

What camps have you attended in the offseason?

"I just went to the UnderArmour combine, to the Nike camp, I'll be going to the USC Rising Stars camp, we're seeing if I'll be able to make it to the Oregon camp, I'll definitely see if I can make it to the All-Poly camp, so we'll just go from there and see if we have the time and every camp works out to where I can attend most of them."

Have you taken any unofficial visits or are you planning any unofficials?

"Unofficial visits, I've taken one to USC, UCLA, obviously the two schools here in Utah -- BYU and Utah. Like I said, were trying to plan to see if I can come up to see Eugene and Corvallis. So we're definitely planning on checking out some schools."
