Could Scales Be Part Of "Package Deal"?

Greensboro (NC) Northern Guilford safety, James Scales, calls himself "the best pound-for-pound tackler on the East Coast." He says this, not out of arrogance, but out of a quiet confidence and a strong belief from within. Coaches from across the country have taken notice, including Oregon secondary coach, John Neal, who has reportedly offered Scales and his talented Northern Guilford teammates.

Do you currently have an offer from Oregon?

"Yes I do."

What kind of contact have you had with Oregon since the beginning of the recruiting process?

"Well first off, the recruiting coordinator for this area was Coach (John) Neal and I talk to Coach Neal almost every week and then the first week coaches could call, I got a call from Coach (Chip) Kelly. As a matter of fact, I just recently talked to him like last week and he was just telling me that I have my offer, you know, and just seeing when they might get a commitment from me and a couple of my other teammates that have offers."

You, Keenan Allen, Gabe King, and Chris McCain all have offers from Oregon now, is that right?

"That's right."

How serious are you guys about all possibly playing at the same school?

"Yes, that is a legitimate possibility. The commitment from all of us could happen and it couldn't happen, you know, we're not sure right now. Definitely thinking about making my commitment this summer before the first game of the season."

Have Coach Kelly and Coach Neal been the two coaches you've been primarily in the most contact with from Oregon?

"That's right."

What is your overall interest in Oregon?

"Well right now Oregon's on top in front of all of my other schools. You know I just really liked it when all of us got a chance to take our visits out there at the same time. We all just really enjoyed it."

What was it about the school and the program that stuck out for you guys?

"Well you know, coming through, you think it's just a bunch of really don't know what to expect and then after you get in to campus, the stadium, you're just like 'Wow!' A great campus and we got a chance to get in the stadium and just seeing everything and everyone just fell in love with it. After, we got a chance to hang out with some of the players and really just mesh with them and we just had a great time."

Did you guys get an opportunity to talk with Remene Alston?

"Yeah we stayed with Remene while we were there, so we really got the full effect of being in Oregon. He told us a lot of things about game day, how crazy it gets, and saying that it would be a good fit for us to go to school."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"I'd say I'm a true hitter. I love to hit. I'm going to say that I'm pound-for-pound the best tackler on the East Coast and on top of that I can cover. I cover one of the top receivers in the country everyday, so he's helped me to raise my level of play and you've seen tremendous improvement."

Would you compare yourself to anyone at the collegiate or professional level?

"As a matter of fact, I'd compare myself to Patrick Chung. You know, he played rover at Oregon and that's the position that Coach Neal wants me to come in and play because I get a chance to roam the field, come down in the box, lay some big hits down and then just be able to drop back in coverage, so I get a little bit of everything."

Are most schools looking to put you at safety?

"Free safety, strong safety, corner. I can play it all."

What are you looking for in a program?

"The deciding factors will be: great atmosphere, climate -- don't want to go somewhere where it's really, really cold, enough humidity type of climate and Oregon's just that well -- and just a real family base, [a] coaching staff that I can have a relationship with on and off the field. Just a great feel with the players and everybody meshes good and just a nice campus."

What are the other offers that you have right now?

"I have Louisville, Kentucky, Duke, and University of Ohio."

You mentioned Oregon was at the top for you, but do you have a top three at this point?

"Well I have a top two between Oregon and Louisville."

Have you outlined a timetable for your decision?

"I'm going to do it a week before [Scales'] first game...I don't have a specific date on when I'll make my decision, but not next week, but the week after."

What are some of the unofficial visits that you've been on outside of your trip to Oregon?

"We left Oregon and went straight to Cal and I've been to Virginia, I've been to Vanderbilt, I've been to Wake...that's all I can remember off the top of my head."
