Ducks Don Pads, Offensive Line in Dog House

Eugene – The Ducks put on the pads today, and it might be a good idea if the Green and Yellow offensive line kept the extra protection on for a while – at least until Offensive Line Coach Steve Greatwood cools off. Greatwood's group did not have the most stellar of days. While it might have been because of a down day, from the sidelines it looked more like the Duck defenders were terrific.

"I thought they did a really nice job," said Oregon Head Coach Chip Kelly of the Oregon defense. "The defense really rose to the occasion."

For most of the practice it looked as though things were picking up right where the powerful Oregon offense left off at the Holiday Bowl in San Diego last December. Quarterbacks Jeremiah Masoli, Nathan Costa and Darron Thomas were showing great accuracy, but somewhere along the 90-minute mark of practice, when the offense and defense squared off for the second time of the day, the defense stepped up. First, it was a horde of players in hot pursuit of Costa and the second unit. No sacks were recorded but that was because the quarterbacks were wearing a red jersey, signifying to lay off from putting player on the ground.

It got worse.

The infectious attitude seemed to spread to the first string as the offense had trouble moving the ball. When the final horn blew to end practice, Coach Greatwood had something special for the big men – some extra hard words followed by some grueling running in place.

Some days are like that.
