Edwards Sees Oregon At The Top

The Ducks under head coach Chip Kelly have made a point of hitting Texas and hitting it hard when it comes to recruiting. 2011 Brenham (TX) wide receiver prospect Derek Edwards could be the next Texan in a long line of players from the Lone Star State to flock north to the University of Oregon. Edwards sat down with eDuck Sports recently and wasn't shy about telling us where his interests lie.

Do you currently have an offer from Oregon?

"I talked to Coach Scott Frost and he said that they have an undercover rule that they can't offer anyone until they meet the head coach, so he said they're gonna try and get us down there this summer and have me meet him and when I meet him he said I'll have an offer."

So you have plans to visit the campus sometime this summer?

"Yes sir. Mostly definitely."

How much contact have you had with Oregon and their coaching staff?

"Actually, not much. Yesterday we had a track meet and one of the DB coaches from Brenham came up to me -- cause I told him I want to go to Oregon -- and he told me he got the (coaches) number for me and I called Coach Frost. We didn't do too much talking, they just said to keep touch with him over the weeks and we're just gonna plan a trip down to Oregon."

Have you been receiving mail from the staff?

"Yes sir. It's not like a lot of mail, just stuff about their facilities and things like that."

What is your overall interest in the University of Oregon?

"Oh I'd say they're definitely at the top with TCU and Texas Tech. Oregon I'd say is at the peak, right above the rest of them."

What is it that has you so interested in Oregon?

"It's just the whole style of play. I think they're going to be really good the next years I'm going to be there. They're really balanced. Lache Seastrunk, I do believe he signed there and everything with Oregon, so they're going to be pretty balanced. If we can run the ball and throw the ball, we're going to be very successful."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"I don't really know. I just get open. I've got great hands, good speed after I catch the ball, good vision on hitches and jailbreaks and screens and stuff like that. Catch and go and open field speed, route running, and I try to play bigger than what I am."

Is there a player at the collegiate or professional level that you'd compare yourself to?

"Not really. No sir."

What are you looking for in a program?

"A program that's gonna treat me like I'm supposed to be treated...like a family. Academics, that's at the top, I should have said that first. Academics is definitely a number one. The NFL would be terrific but the chances of going to the NFL are very, very slim for an average athlete, so academics first. I said I'd like to go to Oregon, but my dad likes to stay involved with me when it comes to sports. Oregon is kinda far and he could always watch the games on TV, but I guess the distance from where I am to how far away school is, it plays a little part but it's not that big of a part. It's a factor."

What official offers do you have from schools at this point?

"On paper, through the stuff I've got in the mail it's been Texas Tech, TCU, and Oklahoma State."

Would you say that you have a top list of schools right now. Either that you have offers from or would like to receive offers from?

"At the top you know it's Oregon, number two is TCU, three I'd like to hear from Ohio State, four I'd like to hear from Miami (Fla.), and five I'd say is Texas Tech.

Have you been or do you plan on going to any camps this spring or in the summer?

"No sir, I don't have any plans. This summer is going to be really hectic going on visits and things like that. I'm gonna try to make time to go to camps and things of that nature, but I don't really have any plans right now. I'm just gonna try to make it to all the schools and see if I can look around and see how everything is going."

Have you taken any unofficial visits or Junior Day visits yet?

"Yes sir. I've taken an unofficial visit to TCU and that's where I got my offer. I'm going to Texas Tech March 27 and I'm gonna try to get up to Oregon and that's really about it."
