University of Oregon names interim AD

EUGENE, Ore. -- (March 26, 2010) – University of Oregon President Richard W. Lariviere has appointed Lorraine Davis to be interim Athletics Director. Davis, former UO vice president for academic affairs, will serve on a month-by-month basis until a permanent Athletics Director is selected.

Davis is a retired administrator and faculty member who will begin the full-time position April 20. As part of the university's tenure reduction program, Davis has continued to serve in part-time employment since retiring in June 2006. Currently, Davis oversees academic support services for student-athletes, and is deputy administrator of the E.C. Brown Foundation and Trust, a philanthropic health education organization. She also chairs the vice provost for enrollment management search, which is expected to be completed soon.

"Lorraine Davis is a superb, experienced administrator who has earned the confidence of the faculty as well as the staff in the athletics department," said Lariviere. "She continues to provide great service to the university at a crucial time while we search for a permanent Athletics Director."

She joined the UO faculty in 1972 and was vice president for academic affairs from 2001 to 2006. All of the deans of the university's schools and colleges reported to Davis when she was vice president. She previously served as graduate coordinator and department head in the university's school and community health program before being appointed vice provost for academic personnel in 1990.

Davis, who earned her doctorate from UO in health education, holds bachelor's and master's degrees in mathematics and health and physical education from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

"For many years, I've worked in varying roles to connect academics and athletics on campus and I am willing to take on an even greater responsibility as interim AD," said Davis. "I appreciate the president's confidence in my ability to contribute and lead the department and look forward to working closely with employees during this transitional period."

The national search for the permanent Athletics Director will involve members from the university administration, coaches and staff, along with Pac-10 Commissioner Larry Scott and others. Lariviere has selected Robin Holmes, vice president for Student Affairs, to chair the committee.

"This interim appointment will provide strong leadership as we evaluate and select the best candidate to become the next permanent Athletics Director," said Lariviere.
