Despite Off-Field Issues, Ducks Firmly In Mix

Oregon's expansive search for quality defensive tackles in 2011 finds itself in the backyard of Auburn (WA) lineman Danny Shelton, who is currently rated as one of the top defensive tackle prospects in the Pacific Northwest. The recent rash of off-field issues at Oregon have tempered Shelton's initial red-hot interest, however the Ducks still remain a strong player for his future services.

Do you currently have an offer from Oregon?

"Yeah."

What kind of contact have you had with the Oregon coaching staff?

"I've called them about twice. The second time they told me I had an offer and then while I was talking to them the second time they told me they were gonna try to get me down there for Junior Day on April 3."

Have you made any decisions as far as making it down to Eugene for Junior Day?

"I'm gonna try, it's just that the transportation is hard for me. I'm planning on going there either with a friend or with my coach."

Which coaches from Oregon have you spoken with?

"I think I've only talked to Coach (Steve) Greatwood."

What is your overall interest in Oregon?

"Oregon, ever since I got my offer, they've always been a college that I wanted to go to. I've always wanted to go to Oregon just because of their defense and I always liked their uniforms too. So when I got the offer, it just made me like Oregon even more. And then when I heard about some of the players getting in trouble, that brought me down because my mom. She thinks I might get in trouble over there, but she hasn't talked to the coaches yet so that might change."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"I'd say that I'm a physical player. I like to be physical. I like running to the ball and just trying to get in on the tackle or something -- make a play."

Would you compare yourself to anyone at the collegiate or professional level?

"I like watching Dwight Freeney, but I don't emulate him because it's pretty hard to do stuff that he does. I just try my best to do whatever and try to make plays."

What are you looking for in a program?

"The number one thing is if they would be able to take care of me because that's what my mom wants. And then the second thing is playing time. I think those are just the two main things that I look for."

What offers do you have from other schools at this point?

"I have an offer from Washington, Washington State, Oregon State, Idaho, UCLA, Cal, and Stanford."

Do you have any leaders right now?

"No, not really. I don't like to pick favorites. I did have one before but it changed and I just didn't want to have a top five or anything so colleges won't get mad at me or anything."

Have you been to any camps this spring or are you planning on going to any camps?

"I haven't been to any camps but I don't know if I'll be going to any of them either."

Have you attended any Junior Days or been on any unofficial visits?

"Right now I don't have any plans for any unofficial visits, but I think I might be going to Junior Day at Oregon...I missed Junior Day for U-Dub and I don't have any transportation for any of the California Junior Days."
