Ducks Impress 5-star Huggins

With a true blend of speed, balance, and raw power, Jersey City (NJ) St. Peter's Prep five-star running back Savon Huggins is arguably the best running back prospect in the United States. Holding offers from virtually every school in the country, Huggins is open to all comers. Recently, eDuck spoke with Huggins about his recruitment and he had some very favorable things to say about Oregon.

Do you currently have an offer from Oregon?

"Yes I do."

What kind of contact have you had with Oregon since the recruiting process started for you?

"I've been trying to catch up with Coach (Chip) Kelly. He's been trying to catch up with me and I've been trying to catch up with him. The recruiter came all the way from the West Coast today to see me so they're showing some heavy interest and they want me bad, so I'm trying to get up there."

Which coaches from Oregon have you spoke with?

"The defensive line coach, Coach (Jerry) Azzinaro. He actually came twice. He came in January during the time they're allowing to come to see me lift and then he came back again. The running back coach (Gary Campbell) is flying out to see me soon. They're on me hard by coming from all the way on the other side of the country."

Are Coach Azzinaro and Coach Campbell the two coaches from Oregon you've spoken the most with?

"Yes. I haven't gotten in touch with Coach Campbell, but they want me to get in touch with him."

What is your overall interest in Oregon at this point?

"I'm leaving my options open. I do want to get out there because I'm considering them. They let me know that they run the ball. A lot of people think they're a (traditional) spread, but they lead in total offense across the country and I want to go somewhere where they run the ball and they give me the rock 20-30 times a game...I know they can do that for me in different ways, so they let me know the deal and what is going on with that. Competing for a spot is no problem, but in terms of what they do to their freshmen like they did this last year, I could be the next thing."

Would it be the style of play then that has you most interested in Oregon?

"Yes. I mean I'm not too high on all the spread teams because some teams are committed to the spread, but they told me that they run the ball. That's their first initial thing. They run the ball. Some teams initial thing is to run the option to set up the pass, but they run the ball and that's what kind of has me liking them because that's what they do."

Oregon reportedly has interest in some other players from New Jersey like Bill Belton and Damiere Byrd. Do you guys talk about Oregon or anything like that?

"We haven't talked about Oregon in particular, but we have spoken before and stuff like that...but now it gives us something else to talk about."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"Leadership, playmaking ability...I can do pretty much anything you ask me to do. I have intangibles that not every player has, not just (physical) ability, but that leadership ability. I'm really hard to bring down, I have very good balance -- not one person can bring me down -- and I think that's the really strong part of my game."

Would you compare yourself to anyone at the collegiate or professsional level?

"I try to pattern my game after Adrian Peterson, but I just want to be myself and make my own name. Some people also say I run like Eric Dickerson."

What are you looking for in a program?

"'Is my heart where that school's at?' That's the biggest thing."

Is distance a factor for you at all?

"No. Not at all."

Have you given any thought as to what you might want to study when you get to college?

What are some of the offers that you have from other schools?

"Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss, Oregon, USC, Stanford, Miami (Fla.), Rutgers, Penn State, Pitt, Illinois...everybody pretty much."

Do you have a top list of schools at this point?

"No. I plan on narrowing it down in the beginning of July."

What schools have you taken unofficial or Junior Day visits to?

"I've visited Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Pitt, Penn State, I visited Boston College my freshman year, Rutgers I see all the time, and I plan on visiting Florida, South Carolina, Notre Dame, and I plan on taking a trip out to the West Coast."
