Ducks "Right In The Mix" For Four-Star Byrd

With the ball in his hands, Erial (NJ) Timber Creek Regional four-star athlete Damiere Byrd is as electric as they come. A football standout with elite track star wheels, Byrd is one of the top prospects coming out of the Northeast in 2011. eDuck sat down with Byrd to gauge his interest in a school that's been awfully busy scouring the East Coast as of late.

Do you currently have an offer from Oregon?

"No."

What kind of contact have you had with Oregon since the recruiting process started for you?

"Well at first they used to send me little things in the mail and stuff like that and then Coach Scott Frost -- he got in touch with me on Facebook and we've been talking and stuff -- and basically they don't really recruit overall on the East Coast unless somebody is really interested in their program already. So right now he actually came to visit my school -- I think it was last Monday -- and basically said that they want to get me on campus and that the offer will probably be there whenever I visit."

Have you made any plans to make an unofficial or official visit to Oregon yet?

"I've been trying to. I run track so my schedule is pretty busy with that. If I'm unable to make it over there in the summer, I do plan on -- if the offer is there -- I do plan on taking an official out there."

There are a few other New Jersey guys that Oregon is reportedly recruiting. Do you ever talk to guys like Savon Huggins and Bill Belton about Oregon or just college in general?

"Yeah I pretty much talk to all of them. We're basically in contact a lot...I don't really know if (Oregon) has been talking to them. I've heard they've talked to them a little, but I'm not really sure about all of that."

Is Coach Frost the only coach who you've spoke with from Oregon?

"Yes."

What is your overall interest in Oregon?

"Oregon is right in the mix. I've been out there before when I was younger for track and ever since I went out there I've always kind of had an interest for them -- before even thinking about getting recruited for football -- so the interest is definitely there. Growing up, I did watch them play ball and all that, so definitely the interest level is there."

Is there anything in particular that has especially caught your eye about the school?

"Well number one being out there and actually seeing all the scenery itself and then, over the past couple of years, their program has been a dominant program in the Pac-10 and in the nation. So that's definitely a plus right there."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"I get a lot of comparisons to DeSean Jackson. I'm a small player, fast, I'm able to catch the ball and get up field and get extra yards with my speed."

Is DeSean a player you try to pattern your game after?

"Yeah. DeSean Jackson has been my favorite player since he was in college and now in the NFL."

Are most schools looking at you at wide receiver?

"Yeah, wide receiver. Only one offer for cornerback and that's from Florida."

Do you have a preference for what you'd like to play?

"No, not really. Whatever gets me on the field faster."

What are you looking for in a program?

"Just having that school being a home away from home. Being able to fit in with the school, fit in with my teammates when I get over there, and just being able to have fun and go play ball."

Have you given any thought as to what you might want to study when you get to college?

"Right now I want to study sports medicine."

What offers from other schools do you hold right now?

"Right now I have 18. The biggest ones are Florida, Iowa, West Virginia, Cincinnati."

Is there a school or a group of schools who are leading for you at this point?

"No. I don't really have a top couple of schools yet. I haven't really put any thought in to it."

Have you taken any Junior Day or unofficial visits yet or are you planning on taking any?

"I've been to Rutgers, UConn, Maryland, and South Carolina. And I'm going to be in Florida this weekend."
