Brown Loves The Spread, Ducks

Standing at 6'3'' and 230 lbs., Murrieta (CA) Vista Murrieta athlete Derrick Brown is an intriguing prospect to project at the next level. As the quarterback for his team, Brown claims he is getting most attention from schools at that position, however he maintains that he is open to playing anywhere. Brown shared his thoughts about recruiting recently, admitting he'd love to hear from Oregon.

Do you currently have an offer from Oregon?

"I don't have an offer from Oregon."

What kind of contact have you had with Oregon since the recruiting process started for you?

"My very first letter I ever received was from Oregon and I get e-mails from Chip Kelly...not him directly, but his staff or whoever does it."

Have you had any one-on-one or phone contact from coaches or anything like that?

"I haven't. I wish."

What is your overall interest in Oregon?

"Oregon is one of my top schools. I'm definitely interested in going to Oregon. I don't know if this might sound dumb, but the uniforms are my favorite (laughter)...but not only that, it's the offense that Coach Kelly runs. My favorite offense is the spread and the option, and everything Masoli does in college is what I want to do in college, so I think I can be successful in that offense. And not just in that offense, but I think I can be successful in any offense."

Would you say that those are the things that have you most interested in Oregon?

"Yeah, and the facilities are beautiful from what I've received on the computer and in my letters and stuff. I've seen pretty much all of it and they're really nice. I just gotta take a visit up there."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"As a player I think I'm very versatile. I'm tough, I know I can play both sides of the ball as well as being a good quarterback...I think I have good field vision, good awareness, and I think I'm a good player that can hopefully make a college team even better."

Of the schools that have been in contact with you, are they looking at you at quarterback or another position?

"I haven't really asked that. I think almost all of them are looking at me as a quarterback."

Would you compare yourself to anyone at the collegiate or professional level?

"Yeah, definitely. Tim Tebow. I think our throwing motions are a lot different, but I try to make my game similar to his and what he does off the field. He's a great leader and I want to be that."

What are you looking for in a program?

"Definitely when I can get on the field the fastest. I'll probably have to redshirt anywhere I go because being a quarterback, you have to learn the system...but after that, I just want to play. And if I can't play quarterback, I definitely want to play something else...I just want to get on the field and contribute. That, and when I grow as a student, definitely the education part will be important."

Have you given any thought as to what you might want to study when you get to college?

"Actually, I have. I want to major in Criminal Justice."

What offers do you currently hold from other schools?

"I have offers from San Diego State and Colorado State."

What are some other schools that you've been hearing a lot from?

"Arizona, Arizona State, USC, UCLA, Washington, Utah, Notre Dame, Oregon, Washington State, and a lot more."

Are there any schools that are leading for you at this point?

"I haven't really thought about who's leading as far as what school is on top of the other. I'm just taking it all in stride, take some visits, and see where I feel most comfortable and where I can get on the field the fastest...that'll probably be the place I go."

Have you taken any Junior Day or unofficial visits? Do you plan on taking any?

"Actually this summer, I'm going somewhere. My coach is Rick Hansen and his son is Tyler Hansen the quarterback for Colorado and I'm going to Colorado with him at the beginning of June. We're gonna go for a week and go to some one-day camps and that's about it. I went to USC's Junior Day and I was supposed to go to UCLA's and I was supposed to go to USC's spring game, but I wasn't able to make it."
