Ducks Lose Thriller to Beavers

PORTLAND, Ore. - Another one-run game between rivals Oregon State and No. 21 Oregon ended in favor of the Beavers, 2-1, on Wednesday night at PGE Park in front of 8,487 fans.

The Ducks fall to 37-20 on the season, while the Beavers improve to 29-21.

Oregon had one last chance for a comeback in the bottom of the ninth with OSU closer Kevin Rhoderick on the mound. Rhoderick retired the first two batters, but issued a full count walk to pinch-hitter Mitch Karraker. First baseman Shawn Peterson then worked Rhoderick to a full count and fouled off several pitches before getting caught looking at strike three for the final out.

Rhoderick earned his fourth save of the season, and left-hander Matt Boyd improved to 7-1 on the season pitching four innings of relief and holding the Ducks to one run on three hits and two walks.

Oregon State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth as Parker Berberet's leadoff double to right paid off for the Beavers.

Oregon 's Christian Jones retired the following two batters, but surrendered a RBI single up the middle to Tyler Smith. OSU looked to add another run as Smith tried to score from first on Adalberto Santos' double to right, but he was gunned down by J.J. Altobelli's throw to Eddie Rodriguez covering the plate on the relay from KC Serna that came in from Steven Packard in right.

The Beavers added a second solo run in the top of the fifth after Christian Jones walked Jared Norris, and moved him to second on a wild pitch. Stefen Romero knocked a RBI single up the middle to plate Norris as the Beavers took a 2-0 lead. That spelled the end for Jones, who was replaced by right-hander Joey Housey on the mound.

Jones (2-2) took the loss after lasting 1 and 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks.

The Ducks cut OSU's two-run lead in half in the bottom of the fifth as Peterson led things off with a double to right. He scored on Altobelli's RBI single up the middle as Oregon closed 2-1. Altobelli moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a ground out, but was left stranded 90 feet away as Marcus Piazzisi 's attempt at a sacrifice bunt was the third out of the inning.

Oregon State outhit the Ducks 11-4, tying season-low hit total.

Oregon State head coach Pat Casey was ejected in the top of the sixth after arguing a call on when Smith was called back to the plate after being hit by a pitch. Smith finished the at-bat by grounding out to first, but Santos tripled off the wall in right center. Ryan Fleckenstein then came on the mound in relief of Joey Housey, making his first appearance since April 21 at Gonzaga.

The senior lefty struck out Norris and Michael Miller, leaving Santos stranded 90 feet away.

Oregon starter Alex Keudell lasted just 2 and 2/3 innings on the mound, holding Oregon State scoreless on three hits while striking out three.

Oregon State starter Tony Bryant went two innings for the Beavers, holding Oregon scoreless on one hit and two hits while failing to tally a strikeout.

Six pitchers appeared in relief for Oregon, as Scott McGough pitched two scoreless innings and Madison Boer retired the side in the ninth including two strikeouts.

Oregon will end its regular season at PK Park hosting a three-game series beginning at 7 p.m. vs. California on Friday night.
