Ducks In Top Five For Grant's Lopa

As a junior last season, Sacramento (CA) Grant Union defensive end Faigame "Puka" Lopa racked up 100 tackles, 20 sacks, forced three fumbles, and blocked four punts. Astonishing, pinball score-like numbers for a player with a relatively modest three-star rating. eDuck sat down with Lopa recently to see exactly where recruiting and his relationship with Oregon stands.

Do you currently have an offer from Oregon?

"Not yet."

What kind of contact have you had with the coaching staff from Oregon?

"I just came back from the university."

Were you in town for the camp?

"Yeah, I was there for the camp."

How many days were you there for the camp?

"I was up there for four days for the camp."

Take us through your time here. How was your visit?

"It was fun meeting new people over there. They taught us how to use our hips for the defensive line...I got a good work out over those three days."

What was your impression of the Oregon coaching staff after getting to spend some one-on-one time with them?

"I just tried to go all out and try and impress them."

What were your impressions of Eugene from what you got a chance to see?

"It was great. It's a nice place over there. I ain't never seen a place like that."

Did you get to tour any of the facilities while you were at Oregon?

"I don't know what it's called, but we went to the weight room and where they do all the rehab...they have a spa thing in's all nice stuff in there."

Which coach or coaches from Oregon have you been in the most contact with?

"Coach (Steve) Greatwood."

In your conversations with him, has he mentioned anything about a potential offer coming through for you?

"Yeah. They were talking about giving me a full ride."

Has he told you when that might come along, or are they still in an evaluation process?

"I don't know. I don't know what their plans are."

What is your overall interest in Oregon?

"They're like top five."

What is your top five right now?

"Oregon, Cal, Washington, Fresno State and Arizona."

Is that in any order?

"No, that's just all the schools. They're random."

What is it about Oregon that you so interested?

"Ever since I was little I've like them. One of our guys that used to go to Grant, Onterrio Smith, he went there. I've just liked them ever since then."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"I'm somebody who will work hard all the time, I have the ability to get off the ball, and I'm a sure tackler."

Do you try to pattern your game after anyone at the collegiate or professional level?

"I don't know if I could comapre myself to somebody up there. I like how Dwight Freeney plays."

What are you looking for in a program?

"I want to see how many guys they have for the defensive line; I want to see how deep they are."

Have you given any thought as to what you might want to study when you get to college?

"Not yet."

What are some of the offers you have from other schools?

"My most recent one is from Oregon State and I've got one from Washington, Washington State, Arizona, Arizona State, San Diego State, Fresno State, and I don't really know."

Have you taken any unofficial visits yet and do you plan on taking any later this summer?

"Yeah, I'm probably gonna take some this summer...I don't know. I want to go to Washington and see how they are."
