Atkinson Says Ducks Are On Top

It's no secret that the Oregon coaching staff has made serious impressions on twin brothers George and Josh Atkinson from Livermore (CA) Granada. Though George appears to be a little more wide open, Josh has firmly contended that Oregon sits atop his list of offers as of right now. eDuck caught up with Josh to get the latest.

Do you currently have an offer from Oregon?

What kind of contact have you had with Oregon since the recruiting process started for you?

"Pretty good. I guess (Nick) Aliotti has been the one that's been recruiting me and my brother (George Atkinson). I've gotten in contact with Coach (John) Neal and Coach (Chip) Kelly and stuff, but it's been pretty good. I mean, that's my number one school right now, basically...if I had to put them on a list."

And has Coach Aliotti been the guy you've had the most contact with?

"(Yeah) Coach Aliotti. He's my guy (laughter)."

You were here for the Oregon Junior Day. Talk about your Junior Day experience in Eugene.

"That was my first time being in Oregon. It was a pretty good experience. I was very impressed with the whole campus and just the facilities. It was off the chain; it was crazy. It was like the best Junior Day I've been to so far."

What is it about Oregon that has you so interested in them right now?

"I got a chance to see a practice and that just really set the bar. I really like how they go get it and get after it; how they work hard. I was just really impressed. I felt like I wanted to be there and be a part of that and how they want to be great. I want to be the best corner and they want to be the best team, so it just kind of fits."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"I'm someone who's going to work hard, someone who wants to be the best corner to ever put on a pair of cleats. Someone who works hard, who works on the little things and is just really coachable and works hard everyday to get better."

Is there a guy at the collegiate or professional level that you try to pattern your game after?

"I would say Nnamdi Asomugha and a little bit of my dad because he coaches me. My dad, he played football for the Oakland Raiders for 11 years and then Nnamdi Asomugha, he's a lockdown corner. He's the best in the league and I want to be the best, so I'm trying to be a lockdown corner."

What are you looking for in a program?

"The main thing I'm looking for is academics and then after that, just football. I really want to see how they practice, if their defensive scheme fits what I do best, and basically how I fit in and how fit in with the players and make sure it's a good team...the coaches, I want to make sure I like the coaches and just the energy of the team and stuff like that."

Have you given any thought as to what you might want to study when you get to college?

"Yeah. I'm thinking about majoring in business or communications."

What are some of the offers that you hold right now from other schools?

"Oregon State, Washington, Washington State, Syracuse, Utah, San Jose State, San Diego State, Arizona State, I can't even name them all. I've got a few. I think I've got 13 or 14."

Do you have a top three or top five or anything like that at this point?

"No, not yet. I'm just gonna take it day by day and see what happens, but not yet though. But Oregon is definitely on top if there was a list."

Have you taken any other unofficial visits yet, or do you plan on taking any unofficial visits later this summer?

"Yeah, I think we're going to go up to see Alabama and possibly Miami. We're going to try to get up to Notre Dame hopefully. This past two weeks, we went to USC and did their little camp thing and got to see them. That's it so far."

In your conversations with Coach Aliotti, has he discussed anything as far as dates for getting you up for an official visit?

"Not yet. We haven't got to that point, but they said we'll wait and see what's good on the calendar...they want me to see a game. We've definitely got to see a game, because I've heard the crowd is crazy up there."
