Thourogood Wants A Crack At Quarterback

Virginia Beach (VA) Ocean Lakes athlete Lafonte Thourogood makes no bones about it. He wants a chance to play quarterback at the next level. Despite being rated a top 15 wide receiver nationally by, Thourogood is searching far and wide for his opportunity. Though it would appear Oregon is filled at the quarterback position for 2011, that hasn't detracted from Thourogood's interest.

Do you currently have an offer from Oregon?

"No sir I do not."

What kind of contact have you had with Oregon since the recruiting process started for you?

"I can't remember the name of one of the coaches that came down -- one of the recruiting coordinators. He actually came down to my school and I ran in to him and said 'Hi' to him and he got to see me throw it around a little bit with some of the players. I e-mailed one of the coaches, but I'm not sure if I got one back. I haven't checked yet, so I haven't really gotten in contact with the Oregon coaches yet, but I plan to."

Do you remember which position coach it was that visited you?

"No sir. I do not remember."

When was the last time you had contact with Oregon?

"I remember it was right before school ended. School ended the 17th, so I'd say a month or two ago."

In your conversations with the coaches, did they mention a potential offer coming through or anything like that?

"Yes sir."

Have they mentioned the possibility of getting you out to Oregon for a visit?

"Yes. I plan on visiting. That's one of my visits that I'm sure I'm going to make. I'm gonna try to do an unofficial first, but if I can't, I'm gonna use one of my official visits to do it."

What is your overall interest in Oregon?

"From what I see, when I look at them and stuff, I don't see how they don't have every top player in the nation going to Oregon. They have great facilities, great coaches who really care for the players...they're not just about winning, they want to make them better men and that's what I'm looking forward to. And you can't beat the offense they run. When I look at them, I could see myself doing that. It kind of fits me. It's a school with strong academics and athletics. That's what draws me there. Not many schools have both that are well-rounded."

Do you know what position Oregon is recruiting you at?

"No sir. They have not talked to me about what they're looking at me at. I am concerned about it but at the same time I'm not, because as long as I get the chance and a shot to play quarterback, then I'm fine with it."

Do you have a preference as to what position you'd like to play, or are you open to whatever?

"I prefer to play quarterback, yes sir I do."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"I would say I'm just an all-around leader. I get that a lot. A lot of coaches and players do say that. When it looks like there's no hope in the game, I always seem to find a way to win or make us compete, so I think the biggest thing I can say that describes me is 'a leader'."

Is there anyone at the collegiate or professional level that you try to pattern your game after?

"Not really, because me being a quarterback, there's a lot of different quarterbacks that are good at a lot of different things. There's not one guy I could say."

What are you looking for in a program?

"The academics. That's the first thing I'm looking at. I believe strongly that academics are kind of like the key out in my eyes. Athletics is second. I hear that when you're in college, it feels like athletics is first but it's really academics. That's one thing I'm looking at. The graduation rate is another thing I'm looking at and the coaching staff...I believe that, not only playing as a quarterback, but playing football as a team, if you can bond with the coaches you can go a long way. That's one thing I've noticed."

Have you given any thought as to what you might want to study when you get to college?

"Yes sir. Architecture."

What are some of the offers that you have from other schools?

"Arkansas, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, East Carolina, North Carolina, North Carolina State, those are just a few I think of."

Do you have any favorites at this point?

"Not really. I just know that Virginia Tech is gonna be in my top no matter what. I know that for sure. That's the only school that I'm positive will be up there, but I'm not sure where."

Have you taken any unofficial visits yet or do you plan on taking any this summer? Have you scheduled any official visits yet?

"No sir, but I've been to almost every college scholarship (offer) I have on the East Coast. I've been to Virginia Tech a few times, West Virginia, Tennessee, all the schools close to the Virginia Beach area (are ones) I've been to. The ones like Oregon and stuff, I gotta wait it out and see what I can do."
