Oregon head coach Chip Kelly and the rest of the Oregon coaching staff received great news today, as four-star wide receiver Tacoi Sumler announced his intent to sign with the University of Oregon come National Letter of Intent Day in February 2011. Sumler is widely regarded nationally as one of the fastest athletes in the Class of 2011, as evidenced by the blistering 4.24 time he posted in the 40 yard dash in a recent combine event.
Prior to announcing his decision to verbally commit to the Ducks, Sumler told ESPNU's Tom Luginbill that academics came first and that, "I was looking for a school where I could get a good education."
For Sumler, Oregon fit that criteria to a T.
"(Oregon) has the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center and it's one of the best sports marketing schools on the West Coast. Along with that, it's a good connection with Nike and I got a chance to go in there and play early and just be an asset to my team."
Though Sumler possesses world class speed, he's clearly a football player who just so happens to excel on the track. Sumler finished his junior campaign at Christopher Columbus with 54 catches for 994 yards and 17 touchdowns, excluding the two kick returns and one interception he returned for scores in 2009. A playmaker in the truest sense of the word, Sumler remarked that Oregon's ability to showcase their playmakers is what also captured his interest in the school.
"I just like the way they run," said Sumler to Luginbill,
"The Pac-10 offenses are great offenses and Oregon gets the ball in their playmakers hands. And in the open field, if you make a play, you can score."
