Duck Coaches Are The Difference For Spruce

A tremendously athletic player who accounted for an astounding 65 catches for 1,325 yards and 19 touchdowns in '09, Westlake Village (CA) Westlake three-star wide receiver Nelson Spruce enters 2010 looking to somehow top those gaudyl numbers. When it comes to recruiting, Spruce is paying particular attention to the relationship he establishes with the various coaching staffs recruiting him.

Do you currently have an offer from Oregon?

"No, not yet. The coaches said they wanted to wait until my season started and then they would talk about an offer."

What kind of contact have you had with Oregon since the recruiting process started for you?

"First off, they came to my practice during spring practice and then I went up there during the beginning of the summer and worked out for the day and I met all the coaches up there."

Which coaches from Oregon have you been in contact with?

"Mostly just Coach (Scott) Frost. He's been the only coach I've really been in contact with."

How often would you say that you're in contact with Coach Frost?

"Right now, I'd say once every of couple of weeks and just seeing how things are going."

What is your overall interest in Oregon?

"Oregon is right at the top of my list. Before I went up there I really liked it, but once I went up there it solidified it. I really liked it."

What is it about the school that has you so interested?

"The coaches there are just a lot different then all the other ones. They're really easy to talk to and when I went up there that's the first thing I noticed. You can talk to any coach and it's just all about football. They're really friendly and easy to talk to."

How would you describe yourself as a player?

"I think I can make plays. Sometimes, I think I'm underestimated and that helps me out, but I can stretch the field and make all the plays on the field."

Is there a guy at the collegiate or professional level that you try to pattern your game after?

"Not completely after one guy, but I like to be physical like Larry Fitzgerald or Anquan Boldin. I try to take parts of a lot of receivers' game and just try to work on mine."

What are you looking for in a program?

"My relationship with the coaches is important, the type of offense...I'm really interested in a school with a spread offense or any team that passes a lot...and then academics is important and just the overall atmosphere of the school."

Have you given any thought as to what you might want to study when you get to college?

"Yeah, I was thinking something like nutrition or sports medicine."

What are some of the offers that you have from other schools?

"I have Hawaii, Washington State, Air Force, Idaho, San Diego State, New Mexico State, San Jose State, there are a lot."

Out of the schools that have and have not offered you, do you have a top list of schools at this point?

"I'm not really 100% sure about this list but I like UCLA, Stanford, Oregon, and Hawaii."

You were up at Oregon this summer, but have you taken any other unofficial visits or have plans on taking any unofficial visits?

"I didn't tour any other schools, but I went to camp at UCLA and USC. That's it."

In your conversations with Coach Frost, have you guys discussed any future visits?

"Yeah. He said that they are on their dead period right now, so I haven't talked to him for awhile, but he said once the season starts they'll evaluate and we'll see how things go."
