Just wanted to pass along a few tidbits from the morning session of doubles today...
Kelly said that tomorrow's practice will be a big day for Thomas and Costa, but said it won't be a "final exam" type of situation. According to Kelly, "Every day has been an evaluation...it's not, 'I went through camp and had 19 really bad practices, but then lit it up in the last scrimmage so I'm gonna be the guy'". Kelly also said that he isn't leaning one way or the other with regard to settling on a quarterback. In fact, he stated that he hasn't even discussed the situation with Oregon offensive coordinator, Mark Helfrich. "We have a chance to evaluate the day tomorrow...we have tomorrow afternoon and Friday to make our decision and then we gotta come out Saturday and know who it's gonna be."
As far as the running back situation goes, Kelly said that tomorrow's scrimmage will also help the staff realize who the third RB will be behind LaMichael James and Kenjon Barner. With Remene Alston still "day-to-day" with a foot injury, Kelly himself is unsure of how that situation will shake out, saying, "I don't know, I really don't." He mentioned this morning he's been pleased with the way Daryle Hawkins has performed there, but is somewhat skeptical he could handle the majority of the carries. Obviously, true freshmen Dontae Williams and Lache Seastrunk will also be in the mix for that third string spot at RB.
The kicking position should be decided tomorrow as well. Sophomore Rob Beard and true freshmen Alejandro Maldonado and Eric Solis are all in the mix heading in to Thursday's scrimmage. "It'll be interesting to see how this whole thing plays out," said Kelly, "We're gonna get some legitimate kicking (tomorrow) with a rush -- field goal opportunities, extra point opportunities -- and then try and finalize that."
Oregon Official Injury Report:
RB Remene Alston (foot), WR Blake Cantu (shoulder), OL Hroniss Grasu (shoulder), WR Josh Huff (ankle), TE Malachi Lewis (foot), LB Derrick Malone (knee), CB Terrance Mitchell (ankle), TE Curtis White (shoulder)
