I think something is missing in all this and that is a very basic element of fraternities - to serve as a place for guys not YET mature enough or prepared to deal with life on their own in a college environment, it is a crucial part of their first experience outside of living at home. The pressure for acceptance comes into play in all of these rituals, not just for the pledges but for the underclassmen just out of the pledge ranks. therefore you have a kid who wants to call 9-11 knows he should, but cannot. Go back and read this and other Frats charters...if they actually did stay true to their ideals they would in fact help guys through a truly tough time in life. Instead what we have is a culture of abuse, alcohol abuse, denigration of women and rape. The entire "Greek system" should be eliminated or in the very least totally reset.
Do some research on the original purpose of fraternities, they were formed as a way to circumvent the rules of University administrators, basically thumb their nose at the university. They were also about having fun (usually provided by easy women). The modern Greek system can't seem to overcome their original purpose. It is in their DNA.
I agree, the entire Greek system should be eliminated.
