Two Offers For Jersey Athlete

Hackensack High's Jean Beljour has 2 scholarship offers already and more are expected to follow. How interested are the Nittany Lions in the outstanding Jersey athlete?

Name: Jean Beljour
Position: RB
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 195 pounds
40-yard dash: 4.4
Max bench press: 275 pounds
School: Hackensack HS, Hackensack, NJ

Jean is the best junior prospect on a Hackensack team that finished 8-4 last season.  His head coach, Ralph Dass, believes he will have many Division I programs from which to choose.

"Last year, he had over 1,700 yards and 24 touchdowns," Coach Dass said last Wednesday.  "A lot of that was from the fullback spot, but then we switched him to tailback towards the end of the year.  He's got real good speed.  He's runs a legitimate 4.4 40-yard dash.  As a sophomore last year in track, he high jumped 6'6".  He made it to the states in the 110 hurdles.  He's a quality player.

"He has two offers already and he's going to have a bunch more.  Syracuse and Rutgers offered so far.  Maryland and Virginia are pretty close to offering him.

"He's a legitimate athlete, strong kid.  He wrestles for me.  He's going down to the state meet this weekend coming up.  He qualified for that tournament.  He's also an outstanding track guy.  He went to one of those combines at a local place (Parisi's Sports Club in Fairlawn, NJ) last year.  He and Ira Guilford were neck-and-neck in all of the categories.  Guilford beat him by like a hundreth of a second in the 40, but Jean had the fastest pro-agility time.  He's a great athlete and it translates to plays on the football field."

Beljour also played linebacker for Hackensack last year.  What position is he projected to play at the college level?

"Probably tailback, even on the defensive side he could be an outside backer if he gets a little bigger.  He could be a strong safety because he runs so well, and he can catch.  He's pretty versatile."

Has Jean heard from Penn State?

"Yeah, they're extremely interested in him.  Coach Ganter came in and met him.  That was right at the end of the senior signing period."

"I got some stuff from UVa, West Virginia, Maryland and some others," Jean said.

Beljour hasn't visited any campuses yet although he did attend a Rutgers game.  Rutgers was the first to offer him a scholarship.

Although he grew up liking the Gators, Beljour is open right now and does not have any favorites.

"To be honest, I'm one of those kids that likes anyone doing their thing.  If you're playing hard ball, I like you."

Jean is currently being recruited as an offensive player.

"Most schools want me to run the ball.  Syracuse wants me to play tailback and I'm guessing Rutgers wants me to do the same because he said he wanted me to run the ball."

Penn State has been in touch in the early going.

"Coach Ganter spoke to my coach and he's been sending me letters."

Two other Hackensack players that Coach Dass believes are good prospects are James Cloud and Kevin Brock.

James Cloud (6'3", 195, 4.55) most likely projects as an outside linebacker at the college level.

"He had 15 sacks last year and 28 tackles for losses," said Coach Dass.  "He really just gets after it.  A lot of people who have seen film like what they've seen of him, the way he runs and just keeps going.  He's a playmaker."

Maryland, Boston College, Virginia, Iowa and Rutgers are some showing interest in Cloud.

Kevin Brock (6'6", 190, 4.6-4.7) is a wide-receiver prospect.  He is not currently on level with either Beljour or Cloud, but is getting looks per Coach Dass because of his size.

"He had 15 catches last year for 340 yards and 3 touchdowns.  We didn't throw the ball all that much because we had 2 kids that went over a thousand yards rushing.  He's got to show more stuff this year, but he has a shot."
