Penn State Adds D-I Hockey

It's official — Penn State to add Division I men's and women's hockey. The Lions will hit the ice in 2012 thanks to $88 million gift.

Penn State is elevating the men's and women's hockey programs to Division I status beginning with the 2012-13 season. The move was made possible by an $88 million donation from Terry and Kim Pegula.

"This is the fulfillment of a dream for many that have been long-time advocates and supporters of Penn State hockey," athletic director Tim Curley said at a press conference held today at the Nittany Lion Inn. "As with all our programs, we will expect both men's and women's hockey to compete for championships and achieve at a high level."

The Pegulas' donation will cover the costs of building an arena for the hockey programs. The arena will be located on the corner of Curtain Road and University Drive directly west of Beaver Stadium and is expected to be completed by December 2013. It's likely that both programs will play their first varsity season at the Greenburg Ice Complex.
