SHORT REPORT: Personnel Update

Get an update from Penn State practice on players who have been out of commission and have since gotten back into action.

Penn State held their third practice of the post-season on Friday with another scheduled for Saturday. There were some attendees of interest at the session.

Although there has been talk of Kevin Newsome's potential transfer, the backup quarterback was in uniform and drilling with the Scout Team on Friday. He recently spoke to the coaches, including Coach Paterno, about his future to which Paterno asked him to "suck it up" and see what happens during spring practice.

Newsome's participation in practice seemingly indicates he may oblige Paterno's request.

Michael Mauti is practicing and said to be "100 percent" recovered from the shoulder injury he sustained against Ohio State. The staff is expected to limit his contact some until they arrive in Florida.

Defensive end Eric Latimore has not dressed for practiced recently and is said to be still dealing with the wrist injury sustained in October. It is unclear if he will be cleared to see action in the bowl game.

Curtis Drake has not been in pads, but is running routes in the individual player drills. He was lost for the season in early August after suffering a broken leg. Although he is not expected to see action given the likely plan to redshirt him, the fact he is running is seen as a positive for his chances of getting back into action for the in spring practice and potentially the bowl sessions.

Redshirt freshman cornerback Derrick Thomas remains out of practice. He was suspended prior to the Iowa game for undisclosed reasons. Observers feel it is unlikely that Thomas will return to the program prior to the bowl game.

As an aside, although Joe Paterno has sounded weak, he is said to "look fine" and "moving great" in practices. is your source for the BEST content and community covering Penn State football.
