Shell Talks Recruiting

If you talk top prospects in the class of 2012 the name Rushel Shell will pop-up. Pittsburgh played host to the next big thing coming out of Hopewell on Monday night.

Hopewell (Pa.) five-star junior running back Rushel Shell ventured to Pittsburgh on Monday night for an unofficial visit and his first chance to meet new Pittsburgh head coach Todd Graham. Shell came away impressed by the new coach. "He (Todd Graham) is a good man and I like how we connected," Shell said. "He knows he has to earn my trust and he knows that. He took a group of us aside and told us that if we come to Pitt we could win a national power."

Shell was impressed with the atmosphere, especially the "Oakland Zoo".

"The atmosphere was great," explained Shell. "Me and Deaysean Rippy went over to "The Zoo" and jumped around with them and then Coach Graham came over and started doing it. Pitt is definitely back on my radar. I just need to spend some more time with the coaching staff."

Depth charts are always brought up and Shell admits that he does check them out from time to time, but he doesn't worry about them.

"I look at them sometimes," he said. "You just have to realize you have to work hard and put in the effort. You get out of it what you put in to it."

Shell has said in the past that he idolized Terrelle Pryor and the talented junior took an unofficial to Ohio State.

"I went up to the Michigan game at Ohio State," Shell stated. "It was a great atmosphere for football. I didn't get to see much else, basically I just saw the game. I text with Terrell from time to time or we talk on Facebook, it's just basic stuff really."

Shell always gets compared to former Hopewell running back Tony Dorsett. he and Dorsett speak fairly frequently.

"We talk when he comes around," Shell said. "He comes back to Hopewell a lot for different events. We talk about school and football. We have a good relationship. He doesn't try to push Pitt on me."

Penn State is another school showing interest and Shell told us that he has forged a solid relationship with Tom Bradley.

"Me and Coach Bradley have a great relationship," Shell explained. "I went to a few camps there when I was younger and I have had a lot of family go there. I might try and get to a junior day there, we'll see."

Earlier in his career, Shell heard a lot of people say that he had a bad attitude or that he caused problems. Shell sums it up pretty easily and he doesn't get caught up in the pressure of being such a highly touted prospect.

"That is what success does to people, when you succeed people want to see you fail," Shell stated. "People want to see you mess up. I don't worry about being ranked so high. i mean it is a great feeling to be respected, but sometimes it can get to you. I have a great support system with my family and close friends, so I rely one them a lot."

Shell estimates that he has over 30 verbal offers and although he is still open. He lists five schools that stand out right now. "I'd say Ohio State, Pittsburgh, Florida, Oregon and Auburn," Shell said when asked for an early top five.
