Lady Lions Edge Out Illini 67-65

With a mere 9.1 seconds left, Julia Trogele's layup put the Lady Lions in position to edge out Illinois with a 67-65 victory, sweeping the season series with the Illini.

Thursday night saw a battle for the Penn State (17-5, 6-2) women's basketball team as the Illini (7-14, 2-6) came to Happy Valley. Despite a rough record this season, Illinois came to play and trailed by only three (26-23) headed into the half.

Senior guard/forward Julia Trogele and sophomore center Nikki Greene led the PSU charge as each posted double-doubles in the contest. The Lady Lions also got a boost from some impressive rebounding efforts and edged out Illinois 49-29 on the boards. Despite the advantage on the glass, Illinois refused to go away, pulling together a 7-0 with 12 minutes left to grab a 45-40 lead.

However, with just under five and a half minutes left PSU managed to go ahead 59-54 thanks to a 13-2 run. Yet, Illinois dug in, managing to lock things up at 65-65. And with a mere 9.1 second left Trogele hit an open layup to seal the victory.

Aside from hitting the last-second shot, Trogele had an impressive outing for PSU, tying her career-high of 19 points while pulling down 11 rebounds.

The Lady Lions return to the Bryce Jordan Center this Sunday at 2 pm to face Ohio State. The game is scheduled to air live on the Big Ten Network.
