Lions Grapple at Big Ten Championships

With five No. 1 seeds, Penn State wrestling is set to grapple in Big Ten Championships this weekend at Northwestern University.

The Nittany Lions boast five No. 1 seeds in the Big Ten Championships, all of whom have first-round byes. The Lions have more No. 1 seeds than any other Big Ten squad, with Wisconsin coming in second with three top seeds.

The Big Ten Championships take place on both Saturday and Sunday at Northwestern University. The Lions' lineup features five freshmen and sophomores and is among the youngest in the conference.

125 pounds

No. 4 Brad Pataky, Sr. vs. Eric Olanowski, Michigan State

Note: The winner of this bout faces No. 5 Michigan's Sean Boyle.

133 pounds

No. 1 Andrew Long, So. vs. Matt Ortega, Indiana

Note: Long defeated Ortega 20-6 in a major decision earlier this season.

141 pounds

No. 5 Andrew Alton, Fr. - first-round bye

Note: Alton will face winner of the bout between Jimmy Kennedy of Illinois and Randy Languis of Ohio State.

149 pounds

No. 1 Frank Molinaro, Jr. - first-round bye

Note: Molinaro will face No. 8 Danny Zilverberg of Minnesota who also has a first-round bye. Molinaro defeated Zilverberg 6-5 in the dual meet last month.

157 pounds

No. 1 David Taylor, Fr.* - first-round bye

Note: Taylor, who is undefeated this season faces off with the winner of the bout between No. 8 Minnesota's Matt Mincey and Shawn Perry of Wisconsin.

165 pounds

James Vollrath, Fr. vs. No. 1 Andrew Howe, Wisconsin

Note: Howe is recovering from an injury and did not participate in the bout between Penn State and Wisconsin last month.

174 pounds No. 1 Ed Ruth, Fr.* - first round bye

Note: Ruth will face the No. 8 seed Curran Jacobs from Michigan State who also has a first-round bye. Ruth defeated Jacobs in an 18-6 major decision earlier this season.

184 pounds

No. 8 Quentin Wright, So. vs. Hunter Collins, Michigan

Note: Wright pinned Collins in 24 seconds earlier this year. The winner of the bout faces No. 1 seed Travis Rutt of Wisconsin.

197 pounds

Nick Ruggear, Fr.* vs. No. 3 Logan Brown, Purdue

Note: The winner of the bout faces No. 6 Anthony Biondo of Michigan.


No. 1 Cameron Wade, Jr. - first-round bye

Note: Wade faces No. 8 Ben Kuhar of Northwestern who also has a first-round bye.
