He will visit Happy Valley on Saturday – for the first time.
"I am excited to see the campus," Mastromatteo said. "And to see what they are all about, to watch practice, and talk to the coaches."
Penn State has yet to offer the standout OLB, and he has a good feeling about his upcoming trip.
"I hope I come away with an offer," Mastromatteo said.
He added, "I talk to Coach (Ron) Vanderlinden a lot. He said they are really close to offering."
The Lions have been at the top of Mastromatteo's list for as long as he can remember.
"I knew they had great linebackers and I always played linebacker," Mastromatteo said. "I just started watching them when I was little."
He continued, "Linebacker U is a huge part of it — I was a pretty big PSU fan, they were one of my top schools to watch growing up."
Another school that Mastromatteo has at the top of his list is Rutgers – and he's already got an offer from the Scarlet Knights.
"I have a great feeling about Rutgers," Mastromatteo said. "I stay connected to their coaches a lot. I have a great connection with them."
How does he size up his own game?
"I think I am a tough, hard-nosed player," Mastromatteo said. "A good tackler, plus I have speed to go along with that."
But football isn't the only factor in his college decision — which Mastromatteo hopes to make before summer starts.
"You have to think about life after football," Mastromatteo said. "So that is a big part of it. I want to go somewhere where I can get a good education."
A good education, that Mastromatteo knows he could find at PSU.
