One look at the physically imposing Spencer Ridenhour this Sunday was all it took for him to get your attention. His impressive performance during the defensive back drills was more than enough to keep it.
After weighing in at 212 pounds and being measured at 5'11 1/2", Spencer ran the 40-yard dash in 4.47 seconds, performed the shuttle in 4.23 seconds and jumped 34 inches in the vertical.
Spencer's abilities also translate to success on the football field. In addition to receiving All-Section honors, he was named co-MVB, Most Valuable Back (along with Lowell Robinson of Mount Vernon) in League AA-South.
"I play running back and strong safety," Spencer said Sunday after the camp. "Iowa, Maryland, Penn State and Nebraska are some of the schools interested in me."
According to Ridenhour, both Penn State and Maryland have already offered scholarships in writing. Each is recruiting him to play strong safety. Penn State's offer arrived about a week ago. Coach Brian Norwood is recruiting Spencer for Penn State.
"I was here yesterday too, for the spring game. They showed me the training room, the weight room, the academic center, the dorms where the freshmen stay their first year and the dorms where you stay when you become a junior and senior."
This weekend was Ridenhour's second trip to Happy Valley. He attended camp at Penn State last summer.
Does he have an early favorite?
"I'm looking more along the lines of Penn State right now."
Ridenhour is unsure as to when he will ultimately make his final decision.
