"I actually Skyped with Coach Joe Paterno yesterday," Lewis said. "And I had my first real conversation with him."
So how did it go?
"It was great," Lewis said. "He was so energetic and looked healthy and sounded great."
He continued, "He was joking with my coach and I, and saying how badly he wants me at Penn State."
Lewis was impressed not only by the youthfulness of the Hall of Fame coach, but also his sense of humor.
"He was joking about basketball and stuff," Lewis said. "It was funny but it was a good time talking to him."
Lewis is one of a handful of top prospects that Coach Paterno has reached out to via Skype this year – and for most the call came unexpectedly.
"He told my coach he wanted to do it out of the blue," Lewis said. "I was excited actually, it was a lot more than what I expected it was going to be."
Lewis is on track to cut down his offer list down from 22 to five at the end of the month – after a visit to Maryland on June 28th.
The only school that has already solidified a spot in his top five? Penn State – and Coach Paterno is only helping the Lions case.
"Coach Joe Paterno told me he wants me to come up for a day in the summer," Lewis said. "So we can have a day to talk and show me more around the campus."
And what does Lewis think of all this attention from Coach Paterno?
"It's an honor," Lewis said. "Because out of all the coaches Joe Paterno is a legend, and he took time out of his day to talk to me."
