Va. DT Commits to Lions

The Nittany Lions added a second pledge this weekend to the Class of 2012 with the commitment of Derek Dowrey, a 6-foot-3, 290-pound defensive tackle from Winchester, Virginia.

This weekend's Rising Senior Camp at Penn State resulted in a pair of commitments for the Class of 2012. First was Austin Johnson, a 6-foot-4, 275-pound two-way lineman from Richland, New Jersey.

The second, confirned by Penn State program sources, was from Derek Dowrey a 6-foot-3, 290-pound defensive tackle from Winchester, Virginia. Dowrey racked up 145 tackles and 10.5 sacks this past season for John Handley High. Dowrey was named Northern Virginia Daily's Defensive Football Player of the Year for his efforts.

Recently Dowrey spoke to about the Nittany Lions, saying, "I really like PSU. I have been there a bunch of times last summer and spring. I really like them but I like other schools, too. If I get an offer from PSU, it would change some things."

It did as Dowrey opted to end his recruitment as soon as Penn State offered him.

Dowrey also had offers from West Virginia, Ohio, East Carolina, Marshall and Richmond.

In terms of his main decision criteria Dowrey previously pointed to the coaching staff, explaining, "I think mostly it comes down to the coaches because I will be spending time with them and I would like to like the coach I am playing for. That will make me want to play better and become a better player. If I find a place where I really like their coach and all their coaches, the defensive line coach and head coach, I will go for that."
