Penn State kicks off preseason practice Thursday, with one question foremost in the minds of Nittany Lion fans: Who will be the starting quarterback when PSU opens with Indiana State at Beaver Stadium Sept. 3?

As things stand, the candidates with a realistic shot are:

• Redshirt junior Matt McGloin. McGloin started five games last season, including the final four. He completed 118 of 215 passes for 1,548 yards, 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also rushed for a pair of scores. McGloin is 6-foot-1, 209 pounds and turned 21 last December.

• Sophomore Rob Bolden. Bolden started eight games last season, including the first seven. He completed 112 of 193 passes for 1,360 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also rushed for a TD. Bolden is 6-3, 211 and turned 19 in February.

You've met the candidates. Now it is time for our first FOS Poll question of the preseason, one in which we are cutting straight to the proverbial chase.
