Veteran journalist Brian Dohn, who is entering his third year with, has been promoted to Northeast Recruiting Analyst and will provide regular updates on Penn State targets to

Dohn boasts a strong background in journalism. He spent 18 years as a beat writer for newspapers, including 11 with the Los Angeles Daily News. While with the Daily News, he covered the L.A. Dodgers for five seasons, and later covered the UCLA football and men's basketball beats for six years.

“I love college football, and was interested in recruiting long before joining Scout,” Dohn said. “The twists and turns of recruiting are fascinating, and I know before a program can win on Saturday, it better win in the living room. Analyzing prospects and providing insight into the type of player they will be for a college program is only part of my job. I also intend to delve into their personalities, so subscribers can get to know these athletes before they ever step on campus.”

Dohn's responsibilities include covering prospects in Scout Northeast region, which runs from Virginia to Maine and extends well into Pennsylvania. For the last two years he served as publisher of the Rutgers site on the Scout network.

“Writing stories is one thing, but I love interacting with the fans of each team, too,” Dohn said. “The message board impact is something newspapers cannot duplicate, and it is such an integral part of Scout. Having a give-and-take with the fans, and developing that personal relationship with them, is an aspect I thoroughly enjoy.”

Dohn graduated from Rutgers in 1992 with a bachelor's degree in journalism. He began his career at The Trentonian (Trenton, N.J.), where covered college sports and high school ice hockey. After a two-year stint covering Connecticut men's basketball and football for the New Haven (Conn.) Register, he moved to the Los Angeles Daily News in 1998.

He was a traveling beat writer, covering the Dodgers, from 1999 until the summer of 2003. Then he moved to the UCLA beats. He joined Scout in Aug. 2009.

“At the higher levels, the line of playing for the love of the game and money is very cloudy,” Dohn said. “One of the great things about covering recruiting is the innocence of many of the prospects, not to mention the ability to meet and learn from players from every walk of life. Writing for a passionate fan base is the icing on the cake for me.”

Dohn joins site recruiting reporters Beth Long and Cory James as contributors to Fight On State. Scout national expert Bob Lichtenfels is also assigned to the site with support from recruiting experts Scott Kennedy, Kristen Kenney, Allen Trieu and Simone Scott.
