A.Q. has been busy. Despite the fact that it's only the middle of May and he hasn't yet completed his junior year of high school, he's taken trips to Penn State, Pittsburgh, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Syracuse and West Virginia. This weekend, he's heading down to Virginia Tech with Butler linebacker Tyrell Sales to participate in Saturday's Nike Camp.
The explanation for Shipley's whirlwind tour is simple; he wants to make an early yet informed decision.
"June 18, that's when I'm making my decision," Shipley said Monday evening.
Why June 18?
"My parents and I were just talking about it and that was just a date when nothing was going on. I thought I'd get it over with so I can get my season underway."
A.Q. does not need to wait around for more scholarship offers. He has plenty from which to choose. On Monday, he received his 20th scholarship offer, from North Carolina State.
"I have a top 6 of Pitt, Penn State, Michigan, Virginia, Iowa and Notre Dame."
Shipley has not yet visited the latter 3 schools and is not sure whether or not he will. That seems to bode well for Pittsburgh, Penn State and Michigan.
Pittsburgh is close by and A.Q. has made several visits, including attending 3 home games last fall.
He travelled to Michigan last fall to watch the Wolverines take on the Nittany Lions. He returned to Ann Arbor recently.
"I just went up for one day, a little visit. I think it was the end of April, around the 20th. I liked it a lot. The campus was nice and the coaches were real friendly and treated me pretty well. I got along with their players pretty well too."
Michigan has given him a verbal offer.
"They said if I was to come up to their camp this summer, they'd give me the written offer. I've been thinking about it and talking about it with my parents."
Shipley has been to Penn State several times, as recently as last month for the Blue-White game. He was at Beaver Stadium last fall for both the Nebraska and Michigan State games. He also visited in March with both parents and had the opportunity to meet the coaching staff, chat with Joe Paterno and watch film with the defensive line coach, Larry Johnson
Defensive Coordinator Tom Bradley has been recruiting A.Q. for Penn State.
"I talked to Coach Bradley tonight. He's wild, he's crazy. He's always keeping me on my toes. I give him a call probably once or twice a week."
Shipley was seen talking with recent Penn State commitments Wyatt Bowman and Greg Harrison while at the Blue-White game last month.
"I know them (Harrison and Bowman) pretty well. I was actually talking to Harrison today."
A.Q. also had good things to say about another recent Nittany Lion verbal who is also from the Pittsburgh area, Dontey Brown.
"I've never played with him, but I'm pretty good friends with him. I've been talking to him a lot lately. I've seen him play. The kid's an animal. He kills people whenever he hits."
That's good news for Penn State fans, not so good news for the rest of the Big 10. The Nittany Lion faithful will be hoping for more good news on the 18th of next month.
