PSU AD Sets Coaching Hire Deadline

Dave Joyner said he intends to have a new man in place before a key upcoming recruiting period.

Penn State acting athletic director Dave Joyner believes the university's long search for a new head football coach will be completed by Jan. 13.

That is the start of the extended recruiting period leading up to national signing day (Feb. 1).

“I do anticipate having a coach in place in time to take advantage of the open (recruiting) period that is coming up,” Joyner said on the radio broadcast of Penn State's home basketball game against Purdue Thursday.

“I would love to have someone in place by then and I would anticipate we'll be able to do that,” he added.

Longtime Nittany Lion coach football Joe Paterno was fired in early November in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal. Former defensive coordinator Tom Bradley has been serving as interim head coach since then.

The university assembled a search committee to find a new coach in late November.

Bradley and current PSU assistants are now on the road recruiting for the school. But the contact period ends Jan. 8, and there is a dead period Jan. 9-12 coinciding with the AFCA Coaches Convention in San Antonio.
