PSU Nabs Strength Coach from Gamecocks

Craig Fitzgerald will be taking over from longtime Nittany Lion assistant John Thomas.

The coaching overhaul at Penn State continued Friday, this time on the strength and conditioning front.

Sources say longtime strength and conditioning coach John “J.T.” Thomas and speed coach Jeremy Scott were both told they were not being retained on new head coach Bill O'Brien's staff.

The same sources report that Penn State has hired 38-year-old Craig Fitzgerald away from South Carolina to become the new strength and conditioning coach. Fitzgerald held the same position with the Gamecocks.

A former player at Maryland, Fitzgerald was on the strength staff for the Terrapins from 2000-2005. O'Brien was the team's running backs coach from 2003-04.

Fitzgerald is the second coach O'Brien has grabbed from the South Carolina staff. John Butler, the special teams coordinator for the Gamecocks, is now the defensive backs coach at PSU.
