With both Sean McHugh and Paul Jefferson graduating after this season, Penn State finds itself in a position where getting a fullback is one of the key positions in this class. The Nittany Lion coaches hope that they have to look no further than Cumberland Valley's Dan Lawlor. Does Lawlor, already the recipient of a Nittany Lion offer, have any interest in joining his current teammate and Penn State commit, Wyatt Bowman, in Happy Valley for the future?
"(Penn State's) great. They're at the top of my list right now," stated Dan, who also has offers from Iowa, Maryland, West Virginia, Vanderbilt, and Connecticut.
Although the Nittany Lions are at the "top" of Dan's list, does that mean they are his clear cut favorite?
"There are other teams but I'm really high on Penn State. It's hard to say because every school I'm interested in is a really great school," stated a diplomatic Dan, who placed Maryland and Notre Dame in a virtual tie with the Nittany Lions.
Dan has unofficially visited each of the three schools that sit atop his list. Earlier this year he visited Maryland twice, traveling to College Park for a Junior Day event and then for the Terps' spring game. Just recently Dan and his family went to Notre Dame. Did he enjoy the visit with the Fighting Irish?
"It went very well. The place is all tradition and everything, which was very nice. It was really a lot of fun for me and my parents to see the place," said Dan of his first trip to South Bend.
Did the Irish coaching staff offer him a scholarship in person?
"They don't send out offers early, so I don't when they are. I don't know if they are even going to."
Along with Notre Dame and Maryland, Dan also visited Penn State twice this spring.
"I've been up there several times. I was up there for the Blue-White Game and another time (month ago)," said Dan. "Wyatt Bowman, Coach Rimpfel and myself went up there and they showed us all the academic stuff and what the academic building for the major I will be, probably business."
"I liked everything really. I like the facilities. The coaching staff's great. It's Penn State, you know."
Although defensive line coach Larry Johnson, Sr. is the man leading the charge for the Nittany Lions, has Wyatt been working on him to join him at Penn State?
"Yeah he's working on me every day," admitted Dan with a laugh.
Dan admits that he is definitely giving Wyatt a good listen. Are Dan and Wyatt close friends?
"Oh yeah. When he moved here (from the Central Mountain School District), I was the first kid to show him around. I wanted him to move here because obviously he's a big boy."
Internet speculation says that Dan is waiting to see if Notre Dame will offer before he makes any kind of decision. Is it true that Dan will not decide until the Irish make up their minds?
"It's hard to say right now," said Dan, who admitted he rooted for Notre Dame along with other schools as a child. "It's pretty much narrowed down to (Maryland, Notre Dame, and Penn State). But things could change."
"When I feel I'm comfortable with the decision I'm going to make. I'm not going to rush. I have plenty of time."
