Penn State Prepares to Open Camp

After a turbulent off-season, the Nittany Lions will report for their first training camp under new coach Bill O"Brien Sunday.

After enduring one of the most tumultuous off-seasons in the history of sports, the Penn State football team will kick off its 2012 season in earnest this weekend.

Players will report to the Lasch Football Building for training camp between 8 a.m. and noon Sunday. There will be team meeting at 1:30 p.m.

“The guys that are in that room at 1:30, those are the guy we are going to battle with,” new PSU coach Bill O'Brien said on The Goon Show Thursday night. “So we're looking forward to that day.”

O'Brien and his staff have spent the last week and half dealing with the fallout of NCAA sanctions that resulted from Penn State's handling of the Sandusky scandal. The most immediate impact was felt from the penalty that allows current players to transfer to other FBS school and be eligible to play immediately.

As of this writing, a handful of now former Nittany Lions had exercised that right, the most prominent being tailback Silas Redd and kicker/punter Anthony Fera.

On The Goon Show, O'Brien said while he disagreed with those moves, the players in question had the right to leave and he respected their decisions.

“But the core of our team stuck together,” he said, adding that there were still 70 scholarship players on the roster. “You talk about the different positions that have left, but nobody's talking about the kids that stayed. We've got a lot of good football players in the program.”

Here is a breakdown of the first week of training camp.
