Penn State has released its official depth chart for the 2012 season-opener against Ohio at Beaver Stadium Saturday.

There are no serious surprises on it.

On offense, senior Matt McGloin -- as expected -- has been tabbed the starting quarterback. There is a bit of a head-turner behind him, though, where the second-teamer is listed as redshirt sophomore Paul Jones or true freshman Steven Bench.

Other true freshmen on the offensive depth chart include: third-team center Wendy Laurent, third-team running back Akeel Lynch, second-team “Y” tight end Jesse James, third-team “F” tight end Brent Wilkerson, and reserve receivers Eugene Lewis (second team), Trevor Williams (second team), Malik Golden (third team) and Jonathan Warner (third team).

Defensively, veteran end Pete Massaro, who has been dealing with a sore knee, is listed as an either/or starter along with redshirt freshman Deion Barnes. The other key either/or scenario is at safety, where Stephen Obeng-Agyapong and Jake Fagnano are in the mix. Fagnano has missed much of training camp with hamstring issues.

True freshmen on the defensive DC include: third-team tackle Austin Johnson, second-team middle linebacker Nyeem Wartman, second-team cornerback Da'Quan Davis and third-team corner Jordan Lucas.

As expected, Sam Ficken is listed as the starting kicker. Alex Butterworth has apparently won the punting job.

There are no kick or punt returners listed on the depth chart.
