OHIO: From The Sideline

A roundup of some of the recruits of note who were on hand when Penn State opened the 2012 season against the Bobcats at Beaver Stadium.

Recruiting momentum slowed for the Penn State when NCAA sanctions hit the university in July. But just like many other things surrounding the program, recruiting has picked up with football season kicking off.

For Saturday's opener with Ohio, Class of 2013 commits Brandon Bell, Adam Breneman, Brendan Mahon, Andrew Nelson and Jordan Smith were all in attendance.

Other recruits of note taking in the game:

• Offensive tackle Austin Fiedler made the trip to State College from Turbotville, Pa.. The 6-foot-6, 300-pound 2013 prospect from Warrior Run High just recently began being recruiting by the Nittany Lions.

• Current PSU linebacker Nyeem Wartman had two former teammates from Valley View High in Jessup, Pa., in attendance, as running back Tyler Phillips and outside linebacker Darnell Ashton made the trip with Valley View head coach George Howanitz.

• Toms River (N.J.) North High kicker/punter Chris Gulla is being recruited at both positions for the time being. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound 2013 prospect does not have any reported offers.

• Great Valley High (Malvern, Pa.) prospect Chris Geiss is being recruited as an athlete rather than a quarterback, which he plays in high school. Geiss shined at the Elite 25 camp back in June, winning the competition portion of the camp. Both Breneman and quarterback Christian Hackenberg attended the Elite 25.

• Away from football, a couple of basketball players took visits to State College Saturday. South Kent (Ohio) High small forward Kamall Richards and Sidewell Friends School (Washington, D.C.) small forward Josh Hart both took official visits. Class of 2014 prospect Tre Campbell took an unofficial visit.
