In conjunction with Penn State's Big Ten opener at Illinois Saturday, Damon's is hosting a fundraiser for the Pat Boland Memorial Intern Scholarship. You can watch the big game on all of the big screens with a crowd of Nittany Lion backers.
A portion of all food sales will go to the fund. Also, there will be a silent auction with lots of cool stuff. That money goes to the fund, as well. The game kicks at noon.
Most people here at FOS either knew Pat directly or knew of him through our work together. For those who don't know of him, Pat was THE radio news guy in State College for more than 20 years. But he also did a lot of sports (such is the work of someone in small-town radio). He always did stuff with FOS (including our Friday Tailgate) and we always did stuff with him on the radio.
Pat was an outstanding reporter. He had more sources on the news side than anyone around. He could be tough in his reporting but was respected by nearly everyone as being fair.
He was, in short, a huge part of the State College community and the whole Penn State scene.
Pat had several bouts of cancer, and kept fighting it off and fighting it off. But it finally got the best of him in early July of 2011. It was a sad day for this area, and we all still miss him.
However, since then, a scholarship fund has been established in his name at Penn State. The goal is to help aspiring reporters in PSU's school of sports journalism.
So, again, if you are in or near State College this weekend, try to stop by Damon's to help this great cause.
Can't make it to town this weekend. You can still help this great cause. See more details here.
Also, on Sunday there will be a mini golf tournament to raise money for the fund. It'll be from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Happy Valley Mini Golf across from Hills Plaza. There will be door prizes and hole prizes, and all money will go directly to the scholarship fund.
Pat always had time to have a little fun, including at the FOS Friday Tailgate with this friend Keith "Goon" Conlin.
